2.5 year old DS not himself

Hell
My DS has not been his usual playful self recently. He has had a cold on and off since the end of May (he would get better then get a runny nose again) and last week he had a tummy bug (not covid) with projectile vomiting. He didn’t have a fever but was very quiet and lethargic and he hasn’t eaten much at all for almost 7 days. When he wakes after nap time he wants to stay in bed for 30 mins or so before coming downstairs end even then he is quiet and down.

We kept him at home for most of the week last week and sent him to the childminder today as he seemed better but he was so upset he didn’t want to go in. The childminder said he wasn’t his usual energetic happy self and didn’t eat anything.

He seemed really lethargic and almost down over the weekend. We had a baby one month ago but she sleeps for long stretches during the day so we get to spend loads of time with DS and give him hugs/play with him. He loves the baby and wants to see her a lot so I don’t think he’s jealous.

He hasn’t seemed himself really since before baby was born but especially now with the lethargy/and being emotional and not eating.

Is this just a combination of a phase/illness? I want my cheeky big meal eating chap back ☹️

I think you need to take him to the GP. He sounds like he's not himself, it's most likely nothing, but I'd definitely want him to have a check over.

louisvillelou · 09/08/2021 19:09

Oh poor baby. I sympathise as mine is very similar at the moment, and it's only been for the weekend but I miss my energetic lively boy so much. Definitely second going to the GP, it sounds like he’s got something going on under the surface and while it might be the lingering effects of a bug, it doesn’t hurt to get it checked out. Can you contact a GP easily where you are? Ours are so good but I know it isn’t as easy everywhere in the country!

Nobaddays · 09/08/2021 19:10

Thank you @LittleMissNaice I’ll try do that tomorrow. My usual GP is a tad dismissive if he doesn’t have a fever (he doesn’t) and even then he usually fobs us off by telling us to go to A&E so I might try and see if I can speak to one of the other GPs.

Does he have all his teeth? My Dd is slightly older but this is her every time she teeths. We are currently cutting canines and she's a sad, sleepy, non eating little girl.

Nobaddays · 09/08/2021 19:12

@louisvillelou thank you! Our GP is doing a triage service at the moment and even then they just seem to refer kids to A&E rather than checking them over themselves but I will try pushing for a face to face appointment. I find them a tad dismissive at that surgery but I’ll push for a face today face appointment 🤞

So teeth combined with bug could be it. Although I agree would get GP to check over anyway.

oneminuteplease · 09/08/2021 19:14

Wow could have wrote this myself.

My 3.4 year old has been exact same since May! I did have my ds in May too so I thought it was to do with that as she isn't coping too well but it doesn't explain the tummy bug, lethargy etc.

Doctors dismissed Me. My little girl has also lost 8kg since May due to no appetite etc and they found out she had low white blood cells and just said they will do a repeat of the bloods in 4 weeks?

I think go to GP and ask for a full blood check

Nobaddays · 09/08/2021 19:15

@louisvillelou ps hope your DS is better soon!

@bookh I think so but it’s hard to check as he won’t let me. He definitely has them all at the bottom but I’ll try and look again tomorrow. He did say his tooth was hurting the other day but I assumed it was because he was eating chocolate chips - I gave him som in the hope that he would get some calories in him but he ate two then pushed them away which is really not like him at all.

Oh yes, teeth as well of course. I feel so sorry for them really - mine has a cold/cough, sickness, a possible UTI and tooth pain, poor little thing! It's a lot for a tiny body to go through 😞

Nobaddays · 09/08/2021 19:17

@bookh I hope you DD gets better!

@oneminuteplease oh my goodness your poor DD. Well done for pushing, I will definitely do this. Thank you and I hope your DD is ok

I had Dd at dentist Friday for check up. I said she had cut one canine, dentist was like noooo, she's cutting four canines, three back molars, one to go. I felt terrible, seven teeth and I couldn't see them.

louisvillelou · 09/08/2021 19:29

Just a thought, but yesterday DS took a bit of a turn and I called 111 for the out of hours GP at our hospital - we got a face to face appt that evening, so maybe that’s worth a try if your own surgery are already triaging to hospital?

Nobaddays · 09/08/2021 19:34

@louisvillelou that’s a good idea, thank you!

@bookh poor little thing so many teeth at once

How is your DS doing? Mine was sick all night 😬😬 and miserable today!

Nobaddays · 10/08/2021 21:16

@louisvillelou thank you for checking in. He’s been a bit subdued today but not sick. I spoke to the GP and they are arranging a face to face review but I’ve not had a call for that yet. He’s not unwell enough to go to A&E I don’t think so will chase them tomorrow.

I’m sorry to hear about your DS, I really do hope he gets better soon. Have you been to the GP again? The GP I spoke to said I should take DS to A&E if his symptoms come back

Oh I’m glad you’re getting a face to face! Hope it proves useful. Your post really resonated with me so I’ve been thinking of you guys a lot today.

DS has spent today sleeping, screaming or breastfeeding. He’s 20 months so a bit younger than yours. I really hope all the sleep is doing him some good!

Nobaddays · 13/08/2021 15:06

@louisvillelou how is your DS doing today? Hopefully the sleep has helped 🤞

Face to face gp appointment was ok but not as helpful as I thought. GP put symptoms down to the arrival of our DD even though all the symptoms started a few months before her birth. I guess it could be this as I couldn’t do heaps with him physically before baby was born. We are trying to involve him with baby and also spend 1:1 time with him. He loves the baby so I didn’t think he was too put out but maybe he is?

He hasn’t eaten much today and the GP said not to push the eating so we’ll keep making his favourite foods and see how he gets on.

His behaviour recently is a little worrying as he keeps slamming doors/shouting “that’s not allowed!” Despite these being things we never/do say at home. He also keeps saying other kids at the Childminder’s are angry and he said yesterday when we picked him up “they were angry with me” but didn’t say who was angry with him and now I’m worried something is going on at his childcare setting ☹️

OP posts:
louisvillelou · 16/08/2021 21:14

Oh that sounds hard! I would be worried in your position too, though I suppose it may even be something he’s picked up from a book/tv show? It is amazing what they will absorb.

My DS is definitely getting better thank you. He was finally diagnosed with pneumonia and had antibiotics which seem to have done the trick, and he’s not being sick any more thank goodness. He’s still tired and a bit washed out but he’s definitely a lot brighter and more cheerful.

I wish I had something practical to suggest for you. It doesn’t sound like a satisfactory response from the GP, even though I’m sure they were doing their best. What does your DH/P and wider family think?

dips14k · 18/08/2021 09:49

@Nobaddays , how is your little one doing please? My 23 month is exactly like yours and visit to a GP was of no use again. They brushed it saying viral. my little one has no vomitting now but very lethargic, even after he has taken up eating a little. Really looking for your input. Will help me

Nobaddays · 19/08/2021 17:06

@dips14k he’s not great at the moment. He’s got a fever and is coughing a lot with a runny nose. We’ve done a covid swab. Apart from his symptoms, he has been playing and eating today so that is something at least. I feel like he’s had something wrong with him at least every other week for ages.

I’m sorry your little one is unwell, how long has he been sick for? Hopefully he will bounce back soon.

@louisvillelou glad your little one is getting better! I think he must have picked up those phrases from somewhere as he seems positive about childcare now (although has been really cranky this week)
