Good morning,

I’m new to this.. wanted to see if anyone has experienced or seen anything similar. Currently, I’m mix feeding with breast and formula. My nipples are cracked and have read this can result in blood in the stool.

Thank you! Smile

i think that is something for your hv

AbsolutelyPatsy · 08/08/2021 09:09

was it hard poo?

linerforlife · 08/08/2021 09:11

If you're sure it came from their anus with the poo then I would call your GP / midwife. Do you have a DD or a DS? Baby girls can sometimes get bleeding from their vaginas as a hormonal change occurs post birth, which is nothing to worry about.

Yes I have, it was something to do with the organs starting to work and everything was fine. But just to be on the safe side, I would phone OOH GP to discuss with such a small baby.

If your nipples are bleeding, then the baby will injest some blood while feeding, so this could be the result. But I would definitely speak to a medical person Today (midwife/HV/doctor)to double check that is what this is, especially as it looks like fresh blood as opposed to darker ‘old’ blood.

Are you getting support with feeding? If your nipples are cracked it might be beneficial to have some help with positioning to help them heal.

We had this with DD and went to A&E. The consultant said it's completely normal with new born girls. Didn't say why but it didn't happen again and she's now 7 and perfectly healthy.

I hope that puts your mind at rest, if not please ring your maternity unit and ask them, they may be able to reassure you x

Flowerfs · 08/08/2021 09:39

@AbsolutelyPatsy it was normal texture I’m guessing.

@linerforlife I have a DD so that would make sense! I will keep an eye out for any other
changes.

@GogCymraeg thank you for your reply Smile

If your nipples are bleeding then blood can can pass through the baby's digestive system but would usually be black 'old' blood by the time it reaches that end. Mine were sicky babies so I had the horror of seeing my babies projectile vomit my blood!

Most likely if your baby is a girl, it's blood that's coming from her vagina. Hormonal changes post-birth mean they often have 'mini periods' at a few days old.

Call your community midwife for actual medical advice.

babbi · 08/08/2021 10:28

It will be hormones causing this to come from her vagina .
It won’t be from her poo , that wouldn’t look fresh .
Not uncommon but please get her seen to reassure yourself .

Also please get help with the breastfeeding 🤱 . You will quickly get drained and sorer if you don’t heal and it will get more painful .

AbsolutelyPatsy · 08/08/2021 11:48

i think it is common, i think one of my dd had that, it is simply hormones, best wishes but do ask a medical professional

Flowerfs · 08/08/2021 16:18

Thank you for all your replies! Does anyone know how long the bleeds last for?

This happened to my DD after birth and was told it’s hormonal and from her vagina
Never happened again x
