Gastroenteritis 8 days so far! When should I seek help?

Hello!

My 16 month old has had gastroenteritis for the 8th day now. She's been vomiting and has diarrhoea every day. She is eating and drinking but barely. We did spend Monday in hsptl as she kept falling over and falling asleep and couldn't stay awake. We were discharged when she'd had glucose through IV and they seemed her sufficiently rehydrated.

How long would you leave it before contacting GP?

What was the discharge advice? Have you cut out dairy completely? After a bad gastro virus if you keep giving milk/formula/dairy the gastro symptoms can continue because the enzyme necessary to process dairy has been affected. Both my dc became lactose intolerant for a number of months after bugs. So I would try little sips of water or very diluted fruit juice every 20 mins, dry toast (no butter, with little bit of jam or peanut butter), plain pasta or rice, little bit of banana. After keeping up that regime for 24 hours and still no improvement I’d call 111 and talk to a clinician.

Dehydration is the biggest risk here so make a note of how many wet nappies per 24hrs.

@KaleJuicer thank you so much for getting back to me.

Aside from them saying there is nasty bugs going round at the moment and go let her lead us in when she's ready to eat, that was it!
We're actually vegan so she doesn't have dairy anyway, thankfully!

I'll stick to the dry, blander foods this weekend and then speak to them Monday if no improvement.
Thanks again!

Did they do a urine test on her?
Just as my LO had what we thought gastro and it went on 10 days, GP done a urine test and turned out he had an infection.

@Cocomade hey!!
Yep, they did a urine test and thankfully no UTI. She's had one before though and aside from the diarrhoea, it was all very similar symptom wise!

That's good then!
I would be contacting Monday tbh whilst there is loads going round atm I've been told to get in touch if it goes over 7 days.
My LO could only tolerate plain toast and even then it took an hour to eat 🙈
