I am getting together a book collection for my little one and I'm looking for some good book suggestions!

What are your top 3 children's books for ages 0-5?

Thanks :)

You Choose by Philippa Goodhart is great for language development, my DC loved it.
Lots of the Ahlberg books, especially Peepo and The Baby's Catalogue (written by the authors as their own little daughter's favourite book was the Mothercare catalogue Grin) and the Alfie books by Shirley Hughes are fabulous.
And also John Burningham's books.
I'd avoid any books that are text versions of TV programs or films, they tend to be terrible to read aloud...

gracelessladyhottramp · 01/08/2021 08:32

Each, peach pear plum
Peepo
Going on a bear hunt
The snail and the whale
Mog

Undersnatch · 01/08/2021 08:33

Is this for a baby who’s not here yet? There are vast differences between what is useful at all th ages 0-5 I’d say.

Marmite27 · 01/08/2021 08:35

Oi Cat / Oi Dog / Oi Frog

The Gruffalo

Lottie Potter Wants an Otter

NannyR · 01/08/2021 08:36

So many to choose from!!!
I look after a just turned four year old and the favourites at the moment are Shark in the Park/Shark in the Dark by Nick Sharratt, Supertato by Sue Hendra and The Girls by Lauren Ace.

The Hairy Maclary books by Lynley Dodd are brilliant, babies enjoy the rhyming, predictable text and toddlers and preschoolers enjoy the pictures and humour.
Goodnight Moon is a good bedtime story with an easy to remember rhyming text.
Peepo by Janet and Allan Ahlberg has to be my all time favourite book to read to little ones.

Moonlaserbearwolf · 01/08/2021 08:52

So many to chose from…
The ones that have really stayed with me from my childhood are
Peach Pear Plum
Sally’s Secret
Meg and Mog books
The Tiger who came to Tea
Dogger

My own children loved all the above and we’ve also discovered these…
Hairy Maclary (lots of books about dogs and cats with brilliant rhyming)
Julia Donaldson books (obviously the Gruffalo, but we particularly love Paper Dolls and Snail and the Whale)
Oi Frog (and others in the series)
The Bears Picnic by Dr Seuss (and so many other great rhyming books)

Sorry couldn’t stick to just 3!

FlowerArranger · 01/08/2021 08:56

How could I forget The Tiger who came to Tea!!

My children also loved One Bear All Alone.
And the Three Billy Goats Gruff

I used to buy tons of books from charity shops and my children had library cards almost as soon as they were born...

DameCelia · 01/08/2021 08:59

Peepo
Dear Zoo
Alfie

Nohomemadecandles · 01/08/2021 09:07

My children loved hearing these read to them. Repeatedly.

Piggity-Wiggity
The Very Hungry Caterpillar
This is the Bear
Dirty Bertie
The Gruffalo
Zog
Supernormal
I want my hat back

They got many books as presents when they were tiny so not necessarily chosen by us but we read them all to them and these were most requested! As long as you read with them, it doesn't matter what you read.

mogtheexcellent · 01/08/2021 09:10

After a recommendation on mumsnet I can confirm the best book in the entire world is 'the runaway dinner' by Allan Alberg.

DD is 7 and we still read it regularly.

mdh2020 · 01/08/2021 09:25

the Singing Mermaid by Julia Donaldson is the book we all loved most of all and The Paper Dolls also by her. A beautiful book with a lovely message.
The Harry and the Dinosaur books are fun too.
Dino’s Dinoasaur books teach young ones about the different dinosaurs and you get a cardboard figure to play with.

Pantheon · 01/08/2021 13:33

Love all the Julia Donaldson books, especially The Smartest Giant in Town and Monkey Puzzle

You Choose

The Lion Inside

The Koala who Could

Yika · 01/08/2021 13:39

Absolutely love the ahlbergs, especially the Baby’s Catalogue.

Where the wild things are by Maurice sendak.

Really enjoyed Leslie Patricelli’s baby books.

Press here by Herve Tullet is a lot of fun.

Yika · 01/08/2021 13:41

The house in the night by Susan Marie Swanson is incredibly beautiful and soothing.

00100001 · 01/08/2021 13:46

I wouldn't get the same books for a baby and a 5 yo.

In all honesty, you can pick them up for pennies in charity shops.

And use your library, free books!

EmergencyHydrangea · 01/08/2021 13:49

I love the Pippa and Pelle books. There's one for each season

Guardup · 01/08/2021 13:51

The Kipper Books by Mike Inkpen

The Paper Dolls by Julia Donaldson

Where’s Spot by Eric Hill

Owl Babies

YessicaHaircut · 01/08/2021 15:14

My little boy is 13 months and currently obsessed with:
The Gruffalo - the original book, the Gruffalo Growl version and the push/pull/slide board book
The Very Hungry Caterpillar - the original book and the finger puppet one
Goodnight Igglepiggle and any Night Garden books
Thomas the Tank Engine lift a flap sound books.

He’s also keen on Spot books and Usborne Peep Inside books as he likes lifting the flaps and more often trying to tear them off!

Thank you so much for your replies :)

Zog
The big orange splot
Tiger who came to tea
Mog books - especially mogs bad thing where she shits in Mr Thomas' chair Grin

FartnissEverbeans · 01/08/2021 20:04

Nobody seems to have mentioned the Pip and Posy series by Axel Scheffler yet! My son is 4yo and they’ve been our favourites since he was very small. I love them all!

The Acorn Wood series is also fab and was great as a series of first books.

I love There’s a Monster in My Book - it’s really interactive and DS thinks it’s hilarious.

My personal favourites to got now are Shel Silverstein - The Missing Piece and The Giving Tree - and Where the Wild Things Are.
