I am getting together a book collection for my little one and I'm looking for some good book suggestions!

What are your top 3 children's books for ages 0-5?

Thanks :)

Ah yes, we loved Pip and Posy too. Must have read them a hundred times and when my daughter was able to read by herself they were the books she went back to. I’m just taking them to the charity shop today as having a big clear out and feeling a bit sad about letting them go!

Wow Said The Owl (it’s beautiful)
Goodnight Moon
Sunk
Cyril The Lonely Cloud

There are loads though!

Lots mentioned already - and:

Owl Babies
The Storm Whale
The cat, the mouse and the runaway train
Dragon Stew

Tabby McTat
There's a dragon in my book (same series as there's a monster in my book I presume.)
Flip, Flap Farm has my child laughing for ages making different animals.

The nursery collection books by Shirley Hughes are just brilliant. The illustrations are beautiful, and the rhyming is lovely. Makes me long for a simple life! I've bought another set from eBay to keep nice for my grandchildren!

DahliaMacNamara · 02/08/2021 22:22

Hairy Maclary
The Bear under the Stairs
Farmer Duck

CatsForLife · 02/08/2021 22:25

Another Ahlberg fan here. Peepo and The Baby Catalogue. Also, The Very Hungry Caterpillar and the Julia Donaldson Acorn Wood books like Fox in Socks

bluechameleon · 02/08/2021 22:26

There are many many wonderful books on here and I recommend you buy them all. I am going to suggest three that feature protagonists from ethnic minorities because I would like to help you avoid the problem I had where I discovered the DC had hundreds of books and only around twenty with main characters from ethnic minority backgrounds. My picks are these:

  • Snowy Day by Jack Ezra Keats
  • The Dot by Peter H Reynolds
  • Juniper Jupiter by Lizzie Stewart

We get a book from dolly once a month so we generally let her do the choosing. We also get whatever is going from second hand shops, there's some really good books that get given away. We also go to the library once a week, so we read whatever is going on from there. There's some obvious classics, aside from that
I don't think it matters. My 3.5 year old seems to enjoy whatever is read to him

Opalfeet · 02/08/2021 22:34

@FartnissEverbeans we bought an acorn wood lift the flap book and then found another four which had hardly been touched in the second hand shop. We are so lucky with our local secondhand shop as we have found some right gems.

The Tales of Acorn Wood series by Julia Donaldson and Alex Scheffler. Includes Fox's Socks, Hide and Seek Pig, Rabbit's Nap, and Postman Bear.
These were the first books that I bought for DD, and read them to her at bedtime since she was one. They have flaps to lift, and rhyme beautifully. They were favourite bedtime books for longer than you would imagine, and now when DD is 11, and has got rid of many baby books, these have been kept as special keepsakes.

Three0fivepointfour · 02/08/2021 23:05

Hippos Go Berserk by Sandra Boynton.

I must be the only person in the world who can’t read Julie Donaldson books. Something about the rhyming depresses my soul.

Pegasusmail · 02/08/2021 23:10

Oh so many but

Stick Man is the favourite
You Choose (still loved aged 7)
Hungry Caterpillar

Also much loved - all Julia Donaldson books (especially Room on the Broom)

The Mole who Knew it was none of his business. I believe they do a pop up version now. Also, The one about Bertie farting. We are a sucker for fart/poop jokes chez Duff.
