Is my newborn lactose intolerant?

Hi mums,

Just looking for some advice. My new born is a few days old and she’s really struggling with acid reflux, not wanting to finish her bottle, gassy and is pooping a lot more, her poop is green/sticky, she also gets a red chest after her feeds and can get quite distressed :(

I also had this problem as a baby and I’m lactose intolerant! I’m thinking about putting her onto lacto free formula.. any suggestions? Thank you!

I think you’re supposed to speak to a Gp.
I just tried it in desperation and it really helped within a few days.

@Sparky888

Thank you.

We had a visit from the midwife yesterday, turns out baby has jaundice, she’s currently going through some light therapy as we speak.

I’m still going to visit my GP about the milk, just to be safe.

Congenital lactase deficiency is very rare. Pre-formula it would mean a baby starves to death. Lactose free formula is a bit of a con.

I'd speak to your GP but if a baby has an intolerance it's much more likely to be milk/soy protein intolerance than lactose intolerance.

I’d speak with your GP but lactose intolerance is actually very uncommon. More likely to be CMPA. My DD has CMPA and had all the symptoms you described. Her dietician told me the bright green vile smelling poos are the tell tale sign as well as reflux almost going hand in hand with CMPA. Give your GP a call and see If they can advise. You’ll probably be put on a low milk formula and hopefully baby will be much happier soon.

If she's just a few days old there's a good chance you could still try breastfeeding with some support, or express breast milk to bottle feed and see if that makes a difference?
