My 7+ months ribs (picture) Is this normal?

NicNac85 · 26/07/2021 18:21

Hello,

I’m tired so probably overthinking but would someone advise if it is normal for his ribs to protrude like this? I have a 4 year old little girl and I do not remember the same with her when she was a baby. I can’t find anything on Google but not sure if it’s how I’m phrasing my question.

Thank you

Have his ribs been like that since birth, and if so did a midwife/whoever comment on it?

NicNac85 · 26/07/2021 18:34

Hi @RiaOverTheRainbow his ribs were never mentioned in the hospital and due to covid we haven’t had in person visits from a HV but hoping to soon. His ribs seem to be more noticeable as he’s gotten older. Looks a little odd to me and I’m starting to worry.

Thank you

No I’d say that’s not normal. I would be getting a GP appt and perhaps even asking for a paediatric referral.

AlmostSummer21 · 26/07/2021 18:40

Why not send the photo to your GP on an e-consult?

Try not to worry though.

RiaOverTheRainbow · 26/07/2021 18:43

I agree with a photo to your GP as a starting point. Hopefully it's nothing, but either way better to know.

TokyoSushi · 26/07/2021 18:43

I'd agree that's not quite right and they need looking at.

Sunny4876 · 26/07/2021 18:43

I'd see gp too.

Muststopeating · 26/07/2021 18:44

My two year old (nearly three) bottom ribs protude, though not quite as severely as that. They always have but since he hasn't grown out of it I meant to ask the HV at his last check and totally forgot.

He is a very happy, healthy toddler though so its hard to believe its impacting him.

If you do talk to the GP would you mind posting back to let us know what they say?

Floopyandtired · 26/07/2021 18:44

Google flared ribs. Looks like that although quite extreme.

VariantL1130 · 26/07/2021 18:44

Sorry OP you need to get this looked at.

user1498572889 · 26/07/2021 18:44

They are not normal normal but they may be his normal. Send a pic to the HV or doctor.

They look unusual. One of my kids has a very strangely shaped chest, obvious from a few months old and then under paediatrics. It has a name and everything and said child is completely unfazed by it so please don’t worry. Send pic to GP and get a referral.

NicNac85 · 26/07/2021 18:46

Thank you all - that’s reassured me that I’m not overthinking and it would be worth getting him checked out. We do have an e consultant appointment system at my docs where pictures can be attached so will do that so can do that right away.

Thank you again for all replies

Yes I would get that looked at. Hope all goes ok Flowers

billiebeeme · 26/07/2021 18:53

Def not normal get him seen, hopefully nothing too serious.

AnyFucker · 26/07/2021 19:02

Get him checked to reassure you

However, all my life my ribs have stuck out at the bottom like that. My DH calls them my 2nd set of boobs. It’s almost like the bottom few are on “backwards”

It’s never caused me any problems but you can see them through tight clothing which I don’t wear anyway so job done

Delicatesubjectsadly · 26/07/2021 19:07

Oh gosh thats not normal no, please get them
Checked over

toocold54 · 26/07/2021 19:17

Hopefully it looks worse the way he’s sitting but I’ve never seen that before so it’s definitely worth getting checked out. He looks a very healthy, gorgeous child so I wouldn’t worry too much Smile

Lockdowntherabbithole · 26/07/2021 19:44

Hi op, I got my baby checked out for this when he was around 4 months. The doctor said he was fine and I’m sure he said they were very “winged”. I didn’t take much notice of what else he said after he’d said he was. I’m going to try and message you some pictures of my baby’s ribs but he’s a lot meatier than yours! So it’s not as obvious. He’s also sleeping so not very obvious with how he’s laid. I do think your little boys look more pronounced than mine so would still get it checked. X

Bunnycat101 · 26/07/2021 22:13

Does he have a dip in his chest as well? I’d take a guess at pectus excavatum if so but the rib flare looks quite pronounced and quite severe.

HopeMumsnet · 27/07/2021 07:26

Hi there NicNac,
We have removed the photo of your extremely lovely baby, as requested.

Etinox · 28/07/2021 21:22

How did you get on @NicNac85?
