Rotavirus Vaccine - possible irrational fear

Oliversmummy19 · 23/07/2021 16:25

I'm completely freaking out about the possibility of catching rotavirus from my babies nappies. I have previously had a horrendous experience following a D&V bug and its left me with awful anxiety about it.

We are washing hands after changing nappies, wiping the changing mat down and wearing gloves to change nappies but I'm still terrified and it's making me fearful of even holding our son incase he leaks from his nappy and I then catch it. I know how irrational this sounds and I absolutely don't want to feel like this.

Can people please share their experiences with me to help reduce my anxiety. Did you or your family members catch it from their babies? What symptoms did you have and how severe were they? How soon after the vaccine did they come? Did your babies have diarrhoea or did it pass by them with no symptoms?
I would really appreciate people's experiences as I think I am making myself worse by creating worst cases in my head.
Thanks x

We had no issues at all.

Sorry you're so anxious about this. Flowers

Candlecandlesss · 23/07/2021 18:06

To be honest I didn't gove it a second thought and did nothing extra to what I normally do (i.e. just wash my hands after changing nappies).

Zarene · 23/07/2021 18:07

No issues at all here, and we didn’t do anything different to normal (just washed hands ect)

You can catch rotavirus if your baby has rotavirus. speaks the voice of experience

If they don't have it, then they can't pass it on to you.

And if they had it, you would know...

olderthanyouthink · 23/07/2021 18:15

@ahoyshipmates OP means baby has had the oral vaccine and is therefore shedding the virus in their poo which can make others sick if hygiene isn't great

OP I don't think we were even properly warned about it but decent hand washing and stuff mean you should be fine. Cloth nappies tend to stop poo leaks much better so I won't have the leakage issue this time but obviously we just have to be a bit more careful with the laundry but poo is still poo so not like you're leaving it on stuff anyway.

I'm terrified of sickness bugs (emetaphobia) and I wasn't worried. We use cloth nappies so just washed them at 60 and washed our hands as usual. We had no problems.

moita · 24/07/2021 14:58

I didn't even know that and I've had two kids! Blush

Obviously I always wash my hands well after nappy changes so never caught anything. Please try not to worry OP

I’ve not known anyone to catch a tummy bug from their babies rotavirus vaccine.

MissDollyMix · 24/07/2021 15:02

Rotavirus is usually a one off bug like chicken pox that you only catch once in your lifetime, most people will have had it in childhood and now be immune. Unlike norovirus which is constantly mutating so sadly is impossible to prevent. Sorry you’re feeling so stressed OP. Basic good hygiene when changing nappies is all that’s required to prevent any cross over of nasties.

SpringRainbow · 24/07/2021 15:05

I didn’t do anything special either time apart from washing hands as normal.

One child’s nappies were particularly vile after the rotavirus vaccine.

Everything was absolutely fine.

CoffeeDay · 24/07/2021 15:24

I have emetophobia as well and DD got 14 days of green diarrhoea after her rotavirus shot. I changed every diaper (10+ a day) and nothing happened! I didn't actually know that it was a live virus so I didn't wash my hands thoroughly the first few days, though at that point I was too sleep deprived to care.

Bobbiepin · 24/07/2021 15:29

The risk is so minor, but you know that. The bigger issue here is your anxiety. Does it creep in in other areas? Post natal anxiety is very common and your GP can help.

Chocolatebuttercream · 24/07/2021 15:31

The NHS website states that as the vaccine is a weakened form of the virus, any shedding will not harm healthy people.

PrettyBlunt · 24/07/2021 15:45

You'll be fine, honestly.

You're taking extreme measures due to your anxiety which is fine.

No DS had normal poos and I just changed his nappy as normal and washed hands afterwards.

WaltzingTilda · 24/07/2021 15:59

I had no issues and don't know of anyone who did. Just washed my hands with soap/handwash.

Travielkapelka · 24/07/2021 16:13

my child had rotavirus and was taken into resus with it he was so ill. I only wish there had been a vaccine at the time. I didn't catch it

Oh right. My dc are adults now, so I didn't know there was a vaccine.

BuffySummersReportingforSanity · 24/07/2021 18:00

It never occurred to me to worry in the slightest about this. I don't think catching rotavirus off the vaccine given to their baby is a thing that has ever happened to an adult, ever.

I think you need to focus on your mental health here, particularly when it's affecting your interaction with your DC. If you are not already under your GP's care for your mental health, I think you need to make an appointment and maybe also have a chat with your HV.

Fleetw00d · 24/07/2021 19:40

My nurse told me it was just a small possibility for about 24-48 hours the vaccine as then it's out their system. She also said I might just have a dodgy tummy not actually the full force of rotavirus. I had no issues though and this was during the time my babies leaked poo every.single.time, until I changed brands!
