Just been told by a professional that my son is delayed by about a year or so. Instead of being typical 3 year old he's more like 2 year old. Mainly in speech and social communication

Has anyone any experience in this and did the child catch up?

Is it speech and communication only or is he delayed in other ways too?

Who was the professional? Are they actively involved in your son’s care (GP, health visitor or childcare?).

If not, I would arrange for him to be checked by GP or health visitor to see what they say. If they are the ones who have said this, I would follow what guidance they have offered for moving forwards.

Do you have a sense yourself of where your son’s development is at? Does he seem to be hitting milestones to you or are there some gaps? I would make a note of anything you’ve noticed or are concerned about and speak to your GP.

Try not to worry, even if there are delays. Development delays can occur for lots of reasons, and they often resolve themselves in time or with the right therapies. The best thing to do is get him checked out and to start interventions if needed.

It's just speech and communication and was a Paedtrician who said this
