Baby's Vaccinations

Hi, my DS is 8 weeks old and has his first round of vaccinations this afternoon.

How were your babies after theirs? Anything I need to know or should be aware of?

My DP is away for work so I'll be taking him alone and dreading it, he already has colic and do the evenings especially are tough alone as it is!

I gave my LO Calpol half hour before hand.
Need to keep an eye out for a temp.
Plenty cuddles!
Didn't effect my DS other than he felt abit sorry for himself and his leg was sore, so would advise to be gentle when changing nappy and dressing.

They cry for the whole of 1/2 mins and get over it tbh, I was crying more than him so maybe expect afew tears!
It's over really quick I always jumped up once plasters were on and rocked him around the room.

Just the usual calpol before and after, little bit of a sore leg but honestly DD wasn’t bothered - I geared myself up for a nightmare but I think it made her sleep more! Honestly it’s worse for us than them most of the time.

Supposed to give 3 doses of paracetamol for the 8 week injections; 1 soon after and 2 more at regular intervals afterwards. This is because MenB injection can cause a high temperature

luciles · 15/07/2021 11:20

Just calpol and cuddles. Like PP, the vaccinations made my baby sleep better!

poodleddoodle · 15/07/2021 11:21

Take the Calpol with you to the GP and give it straight after! Then 2 more doses all with 4-6 hours between them x

Lou98 · 15/07/2021 11:28

Thank you everyone! I will take the calpol with me and be on the lookout for a temp!

He's generally quite a good sleeper anyway, only usually up twice in the night so hopefully that doesn't change. It was more that he already spends hours each evening crying/screaming due to the colic I was worried that this would make it even worse!

Just a bit sleepy after these and generally no big deal.

Cr17 · 15/07/2021 20:17

She had calpol at the drs just before her injections.
She was fine with her 1st jabs, it was her 2nd jabs that she was unsettled with, she was cranky for about 3/4 days! Then she was fine again on the 3rd ones.
Lots of cuddles ❤

Vicky1989x · 15/07/2021 20:41

My DD got quite a high temp after her 1st set of jabs but Calpol bought it down. It was the rotavirus liquid that upset her the most though, she had a bad tummy for a few days.

Hope your DS’s jabs went okay!

Bobbiepin · 15/07/2021 20:43

Calpol, skin to skin and a sling. Skin to skin in the sling is better. Also be especially careful about handwashing after nappy changes.

Chanel05 · 15/07/2021 20:56

My daughter had a temperature at over 39 degrees for her 8 and 16 week vaccinations and even the calpol didn't help 😬😬.

Just as a tip if baby does get that temperature (1/10 do apparently), book the 16 weeks for as early as possible in the morning. Temperatures usually peak 8 hours after and you'll be able to tackle it and bring it down in the day rather than it happen overnight.

Lou98 · 16/07/2021 00:16

He's doing okay after them! He was all smiley in the docs getting the paracetamol and rotavirus orally but was not happy after getting the needles!

He's been sleeping most of the night since but does wake up quite grumpy and crying in between and hasn't really eaten much today at all. Had his jags at half 2 and he's only had one 5oz bottle and one 6oz bottle since where he'd normally have had more than that.

@Chanel05 thank you, his next appointments in the afternoon so I'll maybe ask them to move it to the morning as he does feel like he's burning up now, I've stripped him down and going to take his temp but not long given his last dose of calpol so hopefully that will help

@Lou98 how has he been today?

Our little man had his 8 week jabs just before lunchtime today, only cried a little bit at the time & was fine the next few hours & then has been really unsettled, crying & clingy since. Sleeping at the moment thankfully but just won’t let us set him down the wee pet 😔😔

orangejuicer · 16/07/2021 20:56

Hope he's alright OP. My DS was a bit unsettled for 24 hours but fine after.

Lou98 · 16/07/2021 23:05

@CoffeeMonkey he slept most of the day after getting them at half 2 yesterday but when he woke up he woke screaming and it took a bit to settle him again.

Had quite a rough night with him, he just wanted to be held all night and would wake when I put him down. He never does that, normally he settles himself in his cot. He's slept most of the day today aswell but again, wanting to be held all day. He's asleep in his cot now so fingers crossed he'll be back to his usual self tonight!

@orangejuicer thank you! He was a bit unsettled, just wanted cuddles all day. He seems okay now though so fingers crossed he'll be back to his usual self tonight🤞

How were you with the vaccinations? I bawled my eyes out. Grin

Cloudninenine · 17/07/2021 07:50

Mine was fine. Bit sleepier than usual but that was it.

CoffeeMonkey · 18/07/2021 09:37

@Lou98 sounds like you have written a summary of our last 36 hours! Hope your little man is back to himself again, ours is still a little clingy & grouchy & not taking as much bottle as normal, but I think that’s partly down to the heat as well, can barely stick it myself never mind a wee baby!

Lou98 · 18/07/2021 11:18

@orangejuicer it was really hard haha! Luckily I managed not to cry but I felt so bad for him as he'd been so smiley going in right up until she put the needle in, he looked so shocked🙈

@CoffeeMonkey He's back to his usual self now. Friday night he didn't sleep great again, took him a while to settle down after sleeping most of the day and not eating much but yesterday he seemed a lot happier. He has colic so normally our evenings are spent with him doing a lot of crying/screaming but last night he was actually very content and chilled out, it was lovely!
