Safe sleep

Hi,

I have a 2 year old who sleeps amazing. Loves bed time.

She is still In her cotbed with the sides up. She's never tried to climb out and generally loves her comforts.

She sleeps in a sleep bag but it won't be long before they don't fit. Is it safe to introduce a duvet in a cotbed? I'm sure I read somewhere it's not reccomended if the duvet can't fall off the bed.

I really don't want to move her to a toddler bed yet, I don't think she's ready and don't want to upset her.

Also she doesn't have a pillow yet. She's a belly sleeper and I've always been nervous. Do you think it would be safe to do so and any brands to go for?

Thanks

Could you take one of the sides off?

T0rt0ise · 14/07/2021 15:26

My 17 month old still sleeps in a cot and I've just bought the next size up sleeping bag. I was thinking about a duvet and then decided 'if it ain't broke don't fix it!' (he's 91st percentile and the 18 - 36 months will fit him for a good while yet).

I thought it was allowed once they were one. My 3 year old used a light toddler duvet in her cotbed long before we changed it to a cot.

I mean, it was bundled up at the bottom most of the time, but she had the option!

Oh, and she had a small pillow before the duvet.

BertieBotts · 14/07/2021 15:29

Never heard that about it not being able to fall out. Just that they shouldn't have them before 12 months.

Italiandreams · 14/07/2021 15:31

Mine changed to a light duvet not long after one, moves around so much so preferred the duvet. They are all different.

My almost 4 year old still wears a sleeping bag. H&M sell them up to 4yrs

We bought a cotbed sized duvet and matching pillow from IKEA. The duvet is about 4.5 tog and the pillow is really thin.

We introduced the pillow first, to see if we could "anchor" DS to one end of the cot while he still fitted in the sleeping bags, as he was moving about all over the cot through the night. It took a few weeks but he got used to sleeping at one end, and then we introduced the duvet.

He was in a single bed with pillow, duvet and bed guard about a week before his 2nd birthday.

We did a duvet in the cot - didn’t take the sides off until he was nearly 4.

Lotsoflaughs87 · 14/07/2021 19:32

@frogswimming I'm not really wanting to yet because she's happy as she is .

@LBB2020 thank you I will have a look.

I think I'm going to introduce a pillow first and just see how she gets on.

Thank you

DS is the same age. He's in sleeping bags still and will be for some time; I just bought some bigger ones. He does, however, have a pillow. He has one at nursery and seems to like it. He also likes having a blanket in the cot too albeit mainly to play peekaboo with it seems. My understanding was that by the time they were 2, you don't have to worry so much about bedding.

mistermagpie · 14/07/2021 20:25

My older two kids are 4 and 5, they both still had a sleeping bag until they were three although they did have a pillow. They were also still in a cot until that time though!

My 20 month old is in a cot and I'm going to try and keep her there as long as possible. I prefer a sleeping bag because it helps stop them climbing out...

LockdownCheeseToastie · 14/07/2021 20:31

Sleeping bag and sides will have to go soon as they’ll be using the potty/toilet at night. Cotbed duvet and pillow without the cot sides is fine up to age 4 ish.

AegonT · 14/07/2021 20:48

My daughter never tried to climb out of her cot bed so we left it as a cot till she turned 3.

We introduced a toddler sized pillow at 2.

She stayed in 18-36 month sleep sacks till she turned 3.

We did swap the sleep sacks for a cotbed sized duvet for a bit in the cot before we took the sides off to make it a toddler bed to spread the changes out.

Lotsoflaughs87 · 15/07/2021 15:51

Thanks for all the advise. I'm going to introduce a pillow and get the bigger size sleep bags. I'm also going to leave her in the cotbed for a while as she's happy enough

This is interesting, I’d thought about keeping DS (18mo) in a sleeping bag because of the way he shuffles around so much, a duvet and pillow would be useless. I like the anchoring idea and might try this!
FizzingWhizzbee123 · 15/07/2021 16:36

DS1 stopped rotating in his cot and learned to sleep at one end quite quickly when he got a pillow. We introduced a toddler pillow and light toddler cot bed duvet, in a cot, at 18 months as he started fighting the sleeping bag. He stayed in a cot with sides on until he was almost 3.

I’ve never heard about not using a duvet and pillow in a cot with sides on anywhere other than Mumsnet. The official safe sleep guidelines say it’s allowed from 12 months and I expect the vast majority of kids are still in a cot at this age. It’s about them being old enough to detect their head it covered and to have the dexterity to pull it off.

BertieBotts · 15/07/2021 17:12

How funny, both of my DC have rotated in bed long past using a pillow! Perhaps I gave them pillows too early.
