Refusing milk

Hi ,

My 7 month old is rejected his milk. As soon as he sees his milk bottle he starts to cry. I try every few hours to give him milk but he just won't have any. I am stressing out with worry. I have tried a size up teats.

Am I trying to wean him since he was 6 months old but he isn't taking it well. He will pick the food up and chew on it but can't seem to swallow it .

Has anyone experienced this?

What can I do?

Have you tried him with a cup?

Regarding weaning are you doing BLW I take it?
First few weeks of weaning is all about learning really, touching the food, hand to mouth coordination, they only need a fist (their fist) size amount of food at the moment so let him experiment and it'll come.
Have you done any purées along side?

Milk is his main source at the moment so need to figure out what he isn't liking about the bottle.

Could he be ill? I'd try him with a dose of Calpol to see if he improves.

Have you had a look on his mouth to see if he's teething as well?

SABDELLAHI · 06/07/2021 11:45

@IncyWincy21 yes BLW. It's going great in terms of picking food and chewing but not so great when it comes to swallowing. He has a tantrum when he tries to swallow it. He cries and flaps his hands up and down hoping that works to get his food down lol.

Yes milk is the main source. His not taking it at all. I'm not sure if it's because he likes the taste of food or anything. His always been fussy drinking formula milk from day one. Whines, moves his head about . His on prescribed gaviscon.

@BunnyRuddington yes I gave him capol but that doesn't improve his drinking of milk.

He is teething really bad. Cries when he put his finger in his mouth and chews .

Im a FTM

Is he teething now? I'd keep on with the Calpol but maybe try some Ibruprofen as can be much better for dental pain. Have you tried putting Dentinox gel on his gums before a bottle or solids?

Things like this Banana Icrecreamm*, watermelon or chunks of peeled cool cucumber can help to sooth his gums. A clean, cool, damp flannel to chew on might help as well.

Are you sure there's not something more going on? Why was he prescribed Gaviscon?

If the Gaviscon was prescribed because of wind or reflux, does he have any signs of CMPAA*?

IncyWincy21 · 06/07/2021 12:16

For teething alternate between Calpol and nurofen.

Do you think he needs something stronger than Gaviscon? I don't know any baby that has been on this long term without having to go up to the next med.

Not sure if you’ve already looked into this but from what you’ve said it sounds like he potentially might have silent reflux? You said that he’s always been tricky with taking milk so perhaps he’s been uncomfortable for a while but now it’s just becoming too uncomfortable/painful. My paediatrician said this can often happen. I could be wrong but it’s just a thought. Does he have any CMPA symptoms? Perhaps talk to GP? Try and hypoallergenic formula? I had no results from gaviscon infant other than constipation.

I’d give nurofen in case of pain. It doesn’t sound like BLW is going that well… have you tried spoon feeding him to see if he takes to that better? My DD would have been the same, she refused all fingers food until nearly 1, but ate wonderfully if spoon fed. You can also sneak formula into food like porridge, mash potatoes etc. if they aren’t having enough via bottles. I would also make a GP appointment as soon as you can as it doesn’t sound like the Gaviscon is working and I’d definitely raise the possibility of CMPA.
