I'm being forced to abandon my fluff, and feeling sad......

Have posted on DDs nasty nappy rash before and had lots of good advice, but inspite of trying different washing powders, doing three extra washes everytime to make sure all traces of powder are rinsed out, regularly doing vinegar rinses, using chamomile tea rinses/washable wipes and using every nappy cream known to woman, it just won't go away

I've been away for a couple of weeks and she was in dispos for that time and the rash cleared up. Got home on Wednesday, back in fluff one day (well, half a day/three changes to be exact) and her vulva, thighs and tummy are red raw again.

I don't want to go back to smelly, nasty despicables; I LOVE my fluff, but I can't see any alternative

I had this with BabyDragon. I managed to keep on top of it to start with by alternating disposable/washable at each change. Doing one day washable one day disposable worked too.

People did suggest silk liners as being an option.

SoupDragon · 23/11/2007 12:36

I think hers was maybe linked to the fleece.

DaisyNightingale · 23/11/2007 12:40

thanks soupdragon....I've tried with and without fleece liners but no difference.

haven't tried soapnuts, and looked at some silk liners but never actually bought any.

annoying thing is she was fine for the first eight weeks of using them, the bam....

DH making "why are we spending money on disposables with all that fluff lying around not being used" noises......so I think I may have to sell

Have you tried eco-balls? I've used them for ages as DD1 gets nappy rash very easily. I've found my washable wipes with babybits from babykind have really helped too!

SoupDragon · 23/11/2007 13:50

BabyDragon was fine for months too. I think hers was set off when I tried her overnight, she was fine til then. I guess it was just too much for her - she seems prone to it anyway.

DaisyNightingale · 23/11/2007 13:51

not tried ecoballs....do they get things clean? how do they actually work?

i suppose i could try alternating, it's better than not using fluff at all i suppose.

my main worry is that it takes an age to clear up, but comes back really quickly, and she has a ring around her thighs and on her tummy where the edge of the wrap sits. she doesn't seem bothered by it at all though, but it must be sore

Have you tried a different wrap? What's it made of?

Lucyand2 · 23/11/2007 16:45

Eco-balls seem to work quite well on my nappies but they don't shift stains. I tend to do a cold pre-wash to shift any poo then a 60 wash with the balls in. Now and again I do a wash with surcare and I service wash the machine obsessively to stop any build up.
I'm not that bothered about stains so I'm not the person to ask about those, I just let the sunlight bleach them out (in the summer!)
Silk liners are quite good too, got a fair few of those which I whip out for emergencies. Also - how are you storing your dirty nappies?
And another question - could it be thrush? DD1 has problems with it for ages until I got some cream from the docs.

DaisyNightingale · 23/11/2007 18:56

had to pop out earlier...

...I've got several wraps including tots, nature babies popper, ME Rikki.

I dry pail and wash every two days.

we thought it was thrush, but it's not typical, and although canesten seemed to be helping, it came back even though i was still using the cream. The doc was puzzled as well as it doesn't look typically like anything, but is raised in large patches and very angry looking.

This sounds like what my DD had, she suddenly became allergic to PUL and I moved over to fleece wraps for a while. About 3-4 months later she was fine with PUL again - weird.

runnervt · 23/11/2007 21:22

My ds gets nappy rash if he's in cloth nappies full time. He's ok though if he wears disposables at night and cloth during the day. It means he spends half his time in disposables but only uses one a day. Maybe you could try mixing the two types once you get the rash sorted to see if she copes better with that?

hotbot · 23/11/2007 21:28

dont feel bad, dd is 13mths and we have had to start using sposies, i feel terrible about it,,, apart from the price of them, we feel like we should be shot by the green police. The main thing is her rash celaring up and her feeling more comfortable

DaisyNightingale · 23/11/2007 21:29

I've got a tots fleece wrap. I'll give that a go and see what happens.

The rash was clear for over two weeks, then after half a day in cloth it's back looking as bad as ever

she is very dribbly at the moment (she's 24 weeks), so I know that is probably not helping.

I know what you mean about it coming back very quickly, it's almost like the problem is still lurking there just waiting to flare up again despite how long you keep them in dispicables.

Ours was much worse when she went swimming too.

I think you can get PUL wraps which have fleece around the waist and leg holes - can't remember what they are called though. I know of a few people who have used them because of the problem with PUL being against the skin.

Flamesparrow · 24/11/2007 10:51

DS has started some weird reaction too

Disposables smell. Tis not fun round here.

DaisyNightingale · 24/11/2007 16:14

I think our problem might be thrush as I now have it in my boobs and have a raging sore throat. Hopefullt once we get it cleared up things will settle down.

Flame, can I wash the PUL wraps at 60? tots say 40 on the label, but it is 60 on the ME rikki?

Flamesparrow · 24/11/2007 18:14

As long as it is a one off and not every wash, then go for it.

DaisyNightingale · 24/11/2007 18:33

cheers lovely. I want to get this sorted so that I can buy some Berry Plush.....from you
DH refuses to let me spend more money until she is back in full time cloth.
