New cot smell

Hi MN,

Can someone please advise me, not sure whether this is is under the correct topic - anyway I purchased a new cot for my 4 week old baby and there is a distinctive new cot / paint smell, previously I was using a second hand Chico next to me. The new cot is from Denmark from a company called "pink flamingo" which I saw on Instagram, it was manufactured in Denmark itself (not China). I must admit the cot (which is in the nursery) smell is strong (stinks up the whole room) but I have not used it yet for my baby. I just wanted to know whether these type of new cot smells are typical (DH is saying it is baby safe paint), for new cots purchased in the UK. Should I be concerned? Re SIDS risk etc.

Thank you!

I cannot find any company in Denmark by that name. Where did it ship from? Sometimes, these brands on Instagram are basically drop-shipping businesses...who 'brand' themselves one thing and then supply goods straight from China.

Do you have a link I could look at? I think you're right to be wary.

To add, I have bought and used two cots in the past and neither smelled of anything. They were both timber cots...

Ok so Belgian rather than Danish. Still, seems like a decent store...why don't you call them and ask? Or email and express concern about the smell? Which cot was it?

FortunesFave · 30/06/2021 07:55

Where does it say the cot was made in Denmark...sorry I think I misunderstood and you were saying the company were based there.

Put it outside for a few days, air out your room.
Hopefully that disappears before your baby needs it at 6 months, but no, I’ve never had a smell from any cot in the UK.

I think OP got mixed up. The company is based in Antwerp which is in Belgium.

I wouldn't take the risk and use it. It shouldn't smell.

Probably not baby safe paint either.

My cot which was made in the UK smelt of nothing.

IncyWincy21 · 30/06/2021 08:10

I would get in touch with them op.
Never had a cot that had a smell.

timetokill · 30/06/2021 08:15

Sorry I got mixed up, the company is in Belgium (not Denmark), I called them prior to ordering a few months ago and they confirmed that their goods / cots are manufactured locally.

Well I wouldn't be happy with a smell OP...and others have said the same. I'd return it.
