I have left the access course, I know, I know, but before you all shout and scream at me, I am still doing a course, have just swapped to something else.

Basically, although I was enjoying college, I wasn't enjoying alot of the course, and was having huge doubts over wether a career that needed such high dedication was for me.

I am a mum and that is what I want to be more than anything, and to be really honest, if I wasn't a single mum, and had a hubby with a god job, I would be a sahm full time, even though the kids are at school. I like being there for them 24/7, and I know that will probably be frowned upon, but I just know that with shift work, I would feel too guilty.

Anyhow, I have swapped and i'm starting an Nvq in childcare tommorow, and hopefully I have just sorted out my placement in a day nursery, I have to go and see them in about 10 min.

It is something I know that I will enjoy, and come next year I will actually have a qualification enabling me to go out and get a job, which I really need to be able to do finacially wise.

My ultimate goal now is to get the qualification and eventually get a term time job somewhere

So thats it really, hope you aren't all too dissapointed in me, but at the end of the day, I had to do what I thought was best for me and my kids, and this is it.

Any advice from anyone who has done an nvq in childcare is much appreciated

nutcracker · 22/11/2007 11:45

Thank you

Just got back from the nursery who have said they would love to offer me a placement there, so I start next week doing wednesdays and thursdays, 9-3, which is fab as it is only about 5 min walking distance from the kids school.

Well it sounds like you gave it a lot of thought and it does sound like it will fit in better with family life so good decision.

Good luck with it and I hope you enjoy it.

I think you have done the right thing nutty . Am so pleased you have got a placement sorted out too!

nutcracker · 22/11/2007 13:29

I am sure I am doing the right thing too, although I do feel a bit like I am letting people down somewhat.

I am a little bit scared after seeing just how many babies they have there at once LOL, but i'm sure i'll get used to it, and they cover babies to pre schoolers so i'll have a chance to find out which age group I am best suited to working with etc.

Having a bit of a mare finding out how to get to the adult education centre tommorow, so that will be fun. Why do buses never go where you want them to, and at the times you want to go ?

I think it's great that you had the courage to change direction when you realised the course wasn't right for you.

It isn't as if you're not doing anything, you've swapped to something that's much more right for you, and you're bound to be successful

nutcracker · 22/11/2007 14:02

Thanks, I do feel so much more relaxed about things now.

I must want to do it, as I have to go tommorow and join an already formed group that have know each other for 6 weeks, which is like visiting hell as far as I am concerned LOL.

OOOh only just seen this nutty!!

Hey, this is a really positive thing!! You made this decision yourself!! And went through with it! Which is a hell of a step forward isn't it

How did today go for you??

tiredemma · 23/11/2007 15:31

no- didnt receive anything to a hotmail account. odd.

nutcracker · 23/11/2007 17:26

Today went crap unfortunatly, as the tutor decided that I have missed too much already and so would prefer me to start in Sept . I told her that I had already sorted out a placement but she insisted that I would be too far behind to catch up.

Tbh I think it pissed her off that I couldn't go straight in today as had to take dd2 to the doctors unexpectadly.

Can't you still do the work experience though & get a really good head start???

Is there any courses starting in January for childcare?

LIZS · 23/11/2007 17:50

Oh bum sorry the Access course wasn't right - are there any other alternatives. I wonder whether you can really have missed too much , isn't it modular ?. Who advised you that you could change, maybe they can have a word and present it differently to the tutor. After all you probably have an advantage over many students on that course having had your own kids. Ask them to be specific about what you have missed and could you do e-learning to make it up. If that is not possible can you find something short for January to enable you to work short term somewhere.

nutcracker · 23/11/2007 17:58

It is modular yeah, as far as i know anyway, but she said that in her opinion it was just too much. Tbh it sounded like she just didn't want to have to go through stuff with me that she's already gone through.

I've had another look on the website today, and there are a couple of admin courses starting in Jan that are only a couple of hours a week and could possibly enable me getting an admin job in a school, so i'm going to ring up about those.

Would the nursery only take you on if you do that particular course ? How about a TA's course ?

nutcracker · 23/11/2007 18:20

Could only do nvq in childcare at the nursery.
Could do TA course and find placement at a school BUT they won't start until Sept now, and all the schools normally have their students, volunteers by now.
