Dad Needs Nappy Changing Advice

Hi! First time on this forum. We have a 10 month old son who is super wriggly and it's become almost impossible to get his nappy on without two of us at once. It takes us almost 15 minutes each time and it is sooo stressful. Sad

We don't want to restrain him in any way, but we aside from waving keys over his head we just have no idea what to do.

Does anyone have any suggestions or tips on how we can distract our baby during nappy changing time?

Thank you!
Stu

Get a crazy hat and wriggle your head in an entertaining fashion?

No, get a grip. Be quick and business like and get it done. Firm hold and crack on. Cuddles after.

You’ve got another year or more of this and a toddler will be stronger.

I got the baby play gym back out and put the changing mat under it and change the toys having on it regularly.

Singing nursery rhymes stopped my DS from wriggling so much

If he learns that he can run circles around you with a nappy change at 10 months what's he going to be like when he's 5 and doesn't want to go to school, or 14 and wants to stay out till midnight. Get a grip now. You're in charge. Pin him down and change his nappy.

I know a lot of people prefer the floor at this stage and find it safer, but we actually found the changing table effective in containing DD, and with one of us stood there we didn't feel like she was at any real risk of escape!

I restrained ds using my leg so I had both hands free to get the job done. Just kind of had my leg softly over his tummy, kind of hard to explain exactly how I did it.

enjoyingscience · 19/06/2021 16:51

Yep, use your leg and just crack on. Fancying about for 15 minutes is remarkable.

Midnightballerina · 19/06/2021 16:52

15 mins!, pin him down & get it done.

Hidingunderablanket · 19/06/2021 17:04

Dd required pinning down from a very young age, she hated everything to do with being ‘made’ to do what I wanted. Best way was to straddle her tummy with my knees so she couldn’t escape and change her upside down, no one else to help so that was that. 1 minute of fury and we were on our way.
The car seat required a full on karate chop to get her to bend in the middle. Dear god that child was a determined little madam. She’s turned into a clever and independent tween so I guess it could be worse!

It sounds like you are making nappy changing into a game. 15 mins for two adults to change a baby’s nappy!

I find it easier to change nappies on my lap.

Give him something to hold to distract him. Things that worked for my dc and DGC are bottle, cup with spout, new small toy, old, favourite, small toy that’s interesting, the tv remote, a whisk (or other kitchen implement they haven’t seen before, obviously not sharp or likely to trap little fingers) banana (the distraction is letting him peel the banana skin himself. The nappy change is done before he’s got the skin off), Mr Tumble on YouTube on mobile…

10 month olds are notorious for being strong willed and uncooperative especially at nappy changing times.

It’s something that has to be done. Don’t make it a battle of wills.

Agree with others, either put your leg over him (so he is sideways to you) or pop him on your lap and do it.

BikeRunSki · 19/06/2021 17:43

Just remembered what we did with DD.
I put her on her tummy with a mirror to look at.
She was still enough, long enough to change her nappy.

There are a few options if you Google “changing mst with straps uk”.

Onthegrapevine · 19/06/2021 22:19

Pull up nappy pants. We started them about that age. Much easier to get on!

UhtredRagnarson · 19/06/2021 22:24

Give him your phone. Put coco melon or hey duggee on.

15 minutes! 😂

Kokosrieksts · 19/06/2021 22:34

Pull ups

NiceGerbil · 19/06/2021 22:38

Pull ups are better

I seem to remember I used a one hand holding down and the other doing the nappy method.

And a fair amount of saying no (firm voice natch!) and hauling her back.

Wait till the bit when they're toddling and no way are going back in pushchair.

They arch their back and go hard as a plank so you can't do it up.

In the end sadly I often had to use a knee to push her in.
