Colic or something else?

Hello!

I'm just a bit worried about my little one and want some advice.

My baby is a month old and the last few days especially has been super unsettled.

He's been unsettled before and we've been able to eventually comfort him, but he seems as though he is in pain and every few minutes after you calm him he tenses up his whole body, kicks his legs about, screams, cries and tensed his stomach like he's trying to poo.

He is formula fed and goes 1-2 times a day, not hard poos nice normal ones.

Not sure if this is a digestive issue I should look into... cows milk allergy? Reflux? He does show symptoms of these but then a lot of babies do at first.

People also keep mentioning colic... but there must be a reason behind the colic.

Just looking for some advice of people's experience of similar situations. Thanks!

Hi,
Both my DSs were like this. Both had/have reflux, DS2 also has an intolerance to milk so he is on lactose free now and seems to be doing a lot better in terms of being in pain.
I had to battle for weeks to get him seen properly. By which point his stomach lining and throat were severely inflamed and he stopped eating as it was hurting him. He was given omperazol which helped.

It may be more refluxy as with milk allergies you tend to see horrendous diarrhoea poos which stink, pulling away from bottle and screaming, taking very little amounts, rashes etc.

If you are at all worried I would get him checked.

@Lgw20 my 10weeks is the same - have you tried white noise to help? I found having that on helps mine to relax so I can help him wind when he tightens up.

Also after feeding I read that when winding having him in the Buddha position and don't tap the back, use your palm and do circle motion, this helps to relax the diaphragm and help free wind. If baby hasn't release any wind switch it to over shoulder and repeat with the hand rubbing - winding up to an hour.

I followed this and it made a massive difference to my little one.

I hope that helps and good luck.

@Titch1993 Yeah I visited the doctors yesterday and explain his symptoms. She said she wasn't worried... as they always do.

I'd say my main concern is he is quite squirmy during and after feeds and arches his back. He also doesn't poo for like 24 hours then has an explosion.. which usually leaks haha. Joy for me!

I'll keep an eye on it.

@SteakChips

Thanks for your tips!

I always try burp him in the Buddha position but he arches back constantly haha. Makes it very difficult... he more likes the over the shoulder one but they take ages to come out.

@Lgw20
I'm probably over cautious but would definitely keep pushing at the drs, this is how my DS2 started (squirming and pulling away and the explosive nappies! I don't miss that!!) and I left it as they werent worried. I must have visited 4 times a week for 3 weeks until I finally got a Dr who listened to me. Within hrs we were up at hospital and having checks.
Hope your LO settles soon! Smile
