Baby not drank much

DS 8 weeks old. We make him 6oz bottles but he has only drank 17.5oz so far today (formula fed). Only 1 out of the 5 bottles we've made that he has drank 5.5oz. The rest of the bottles have been 2-3oz. He drinks so much then wind him and he just isn't interested after winding. I'm a little concerned. Should I be?
It might be important to add (or not) that he had a long day out yesterday and he slept for 10 hours last night but I managed to get a dream feed in. But after the dream feed he slept for 8 before waking up for the 5.5oz bottle mentioned earlier

What weight is he?
A general rule of thumb is 2.5oz per lb of weight per 24 hours

Babies vary hugely in how much they eat so I wouldn’t worry. But more, bigger bottles are better than frequent and fewer for wind/colic so if he’s feeding every hour or two you could try and space them out a bit gradually.

@dementedpixie 11lb13oz last Wednesday

@FudgeSundae thank you. He typically feeds every 3-4 hours on a normal day but today since his nap this afternoon it's been every 2 hours. I feel so hopeless because I don't know what to do and don't want to force him if he doesn't want it. He has done this a few times in the last month or so

Can you try and stretch them? I use a dummy when my LO feels sucky. But generally I wouldn’t worry. Babies are all different and if he’s gaining weight and has plenty of wet and dirty nappies he’s eating plenty.

My little one had days where he didn’t want much follies by days when he wanted a lot more. I figured it was a bit like some days I’m starving and some days I hardly eat.

Over a longer period (say 3-4 days) do you think he gets enough in the round?

Can you move the winding to the end of the bottle?
Babies can have fussy days, but i would stretch it longer than 2 hours.

Nazz10 · 15/06/2021 08:59

@MoonlightApple Im not sure. According to the side of the formula box he should be eating 30oz but I think there's probably been like 4 days in the last month where he's reached 29. All the other days he averages between 24-27oz in 24 hours.
He had 1oz at 9.30pm last night (had 3oz at 8pm ish) and then slept until 7.30am. He's just had 5oz and now he's back to sleep. I'm worried that he's sleeping so much and not eating great ☹️
No temperature. Was smiling and talking while he was awake...

Hi OP, my DS is the same age and is currently on 5oz feeds every 3-4 hours. Sometimes he doesn't finish it all. I am wondering if the hot weather has impacted over the last few days as he has slept more. He had his first bottle this morning and left 2oz and then went back off for a snooze.

MoonlightApple · 15/06/2021 09:09

I think this sounds like something you should ring your health visitor about. In all probability it’s just your baby doing their thing and they’re completely fine and to me it sounds like they could just be having a growth spurt or something. But I’m not an expert and the HV is so why not get rid of the worry by chatting to them about it. Smile

Nazz10 · 15/06/2021 09:35

He's wide awake now 🙄 I'm gonna see how he goes this morning/afternoon before I call the HV. I think it could possibly have been a growth spurt or maybe the heat and fun-filled day the day before had just took it out of him. Fingers crossed he drinks a little more as the day goes by

@bb800sam Hi! Thank you. Yes I agree I do think the heat element may have contributed. Does your DS sleep through the night?

@Nazz10 DS has a dream feed at about 1 then sleeps through until I get up at 6, he's normally starting to stir when I get up. I'm ok with 6am as I'm a morning person! Smile
