Hayfever and breastfeeding! Advice needed please!

I am really struggling with hayfever at the moment but currently breastfeeding so know i can't take a lot of the medication. The pharmacist said I could only have the barrier stuff which is a white powder up the nose (looks a bit suspect haha) but it really doesn't do anything. Does anyone know of anything i can take, particularly for a sniffy nose and sneezing, that is breastfeeding friendly? Or does anyone know whether the Dr can prescribe anything? It feels like my face is falling off haha
Thanks all!

My GP was happy to prescribe fexfenadine (sp?) to me whilst feeding.
Talk to your GP & feel better soon 🙂

NHS advice here:
www.nhs.uk/common-health-questions/medicines/can-i-take-hay-fever-medicine-if-i-am-breastfeeding/

Based on that and your symptoms I would try a nose spray. They can take a week or so to be effective so don't expect it to work straight away.

Thanks @Ohmyzebra I'll speak to the gp on Monday and hopefully get that too! Did you work like normal hayfever stuff?
Thanks @ViperAtTheGatesOfDawn that looks promising, I've always used the nasal sprays and found them effective so that's good 👍

I used loratadine while pregnant and breastfeeding and it's fine in normal doses.

TheFutureIs · 12/06/2021 19:42

Loratadine and citirizine are both fine when breastfeeding. There's a fab website www.breastfeedingnetwork.org.uk/drugs-factsheets/ where you can get info about pretty much every medicine and feeding. It's been produced by a pharmacist who really knows her stuff

FakeTanandProsecco · 12/06/2021 19:44

The Breastfeeding Network have factsheets for all sorts of medications- antihistamines included. Have a Google and they should come up. It's definitely safe enough to take OTC antihistamines like loratidine though

CookieMumsters · 12/06/2021 19:47

I use loratidine on the recommendation from the breastfeeding network. No issues for us.

Have you tried vaseline around your nostrils? That can stop some irritants getting in.

2020N · 13/06/2021 09:07

I found the sterimar nasal spray helpful.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 13/06/2021 09:38

Beconase nasal spray plus antihistamine eye drops plus I took anti histamine during pregnancy but can't remember which one.

Miriam101 · 13/06/2021 10:53

Just get loratadine. It’s fine. I think the NHS website says so as well as other breastfeeding places. I think sometimes pharmacists get a bit flummoxed by breastfeeding questions and err on the side of extreme caution
