My 9 month old will settle alone (drop and run lol) for morning and afternoon nap but we have to cuddle him to sleep at bedtime, always wakes when we lay him into bed, why would this be and how to help him?

His Routine:
6am - Wake
7:15am - 4oz milk
8am - Breakfast mixed with 3oz milk
9am - Nap... 45mins - 1hr
11:30 - Lunch
12:45 - Nap - 2hours
3pm - 6oz Milk
5pm - Dinner
6:40pm - MIlk 4-6oz
7pm - Bed

Any suggestions to routine or sleeping?

He might be overtired by bedtime. He has wake windows of 3 hours give or take for the first 2 naps and then he’s awake for more than 4 hours before bed. Could try moving his second nap slightly later? At 9 months my DD woke at 6, first nap at 9:30, second nap at 2/2:30 (woke no later than 4) and then bed at 7.. she napped for 1-1.5 hours each nap.

Here is my 9 month olds

7.00am wake & Nurse
8.00am Breakfast
9.30am nap 30mins
10.00am Nurse
11.45am Lunch
2.15pm Nurse
2.30pm nap 40 mins-1hour.
4.00pm Nurse
5.00pm Dinner
6.45pm Nurse
7.00pm bed

We have the opposite he wont settle 100% of the time for naps.. but I assume that's because he is breastfed 😂

Babies will be babies they decide what they want when they want it! Go with the flow there still little and it seems you have a good routine 💗

His routine looks perfect. If he can self-settle at nap time then I would just persevere at bedtime - maybe just sit by the cot and hold his hand or rub his back instead of cuddling, then gradually move away over a few nights.

Everything looks perfect ☺️ it's very easy for me to say as I know it's so hard when you're in the moment but they kinda just do their thing until they're ready. I've always snuggled my baby to sleep, he's 14 months now and there's been times I've tried putting him down at night to what feels like hours with no joy! But the other day he was having none of it so I put him down, he rolled over and went to sleep on his own and I have never felt such a drop in the gut. I know he will always need me and those bedtime snuggles will come back but my goodness I miss it at the moment.
No two babies are the same, some just need that extra bit to bob off (even though it feels like you're constantly fighting it). But they'll get there in their own time.
Take it all in, you're doing a wonderful job by the sounds of it 🥰

Meant to add there, don't change your routine! This was similar to my boy and when we hit regression stages particularly if milestones where to blame too, it always went back to being "easy" to put down again then it'd start back a few months later x

Hi all!

My 9 month old routine

Wake @ 07:00-0730
Milk 6-8oz @ 07:30
Porridge and fruit @ 08:30-0900 (with formula) (offer water for fluid only after his porridge)
Nap 1 @ 10:00-11:30
Light snack @ 12:00 (melty sticks/avocado/fruit/ broccoli - finger food) with water as fluid/ drink
Milk 3-4 oz taken @ 13:00
Lunch meal @ 14:00 meat/beans or fish with rice/ pasta or potato and lots of cooked veg. Dessert is usually always yoghurt with fresh fruit (with water as fluid)
Nap 2 @ 15:00-16:30
Milk 5oz taken @ 17:00
Dinner @ 18:45 or 19:00 meat/beans or fish with rice/ pasta or potato and lot of cooked veg. Dessert is usually always yoghurt with fresh fruit (with water as fluid)
Bath 19:30
Bed 20:00 ( always sleeps at this time)

I will offer a little dream feed at 2130 if I feel he hasn’t had a sufficient amount of dinner but this is really rare, in 14 days I may do this once.

He will usually sleep until 0300 and upon waking I offer him water as I don’t want him eating in the night, 80 percent of the time he settles straight back to sleep after water and a nappy change but if he is still up, I offer no more than 4-5oz of milk then he will sleep until 07:00-0730

If he sleeps through til 0530 I will offer milk a full bottle of milk and he usually sleeps until 0800

This routine may alter by up to 30 mins but I am quite strict with it. It’s difficult as right now he is trying to walk and has 6 teeth so is teething constantly which sometimes affects his night time routine and so he will need that extra comfort but he usually settles within the mentioned times by 30 mins.

All I can say is being a parent is not easy, hats off to all of you strong parents out there that continue to persevere through these difficult unpredictable times. I still struggle with it all and I don’t think I will ever not struggle but I try to find ways to cope by giving my baby a strict routine, at least with this, I know he is eating and drinking well and getting a sufficient amount of sleep as these things are imperative to the development of my child.

Keep going mamas! X

Lailagyal · 03/09/2021 09:10

I would also like to mention, if he goes to sleep earlier than anticipated (first nap) I will offer him porridge after his first nap. I really I try to keep him up until after 0930, this isn’t always possible as there have been a few times where he has woken up at 0630 instead of the desired 0700-0730

I’d also like to mention that this routine has been trial and error as before this he was having 3 naps.

And waking up 3 times at night but I gradually made changes as I knew he was ready…

Just find something that works for you and baby, ignore other people’s judgments as long as baby is happy and healthy and getting sufficient sleep, do what’s best for your little one x

As parents we have to be adaptable, I’d love to stay at home all the time to ensure that baby’s routine is spot on and monotonous but we have to leave the house sometimes 😂😂 that’s usually where the daily schedule gets a bit messy but I will try to follow the routine as best as I can to ensure it doesn’t get interrupted.

All the best mamas! And papas! X

RiversideAnne · 03/09/2021 09:39

Here’s my 9 month old’s routine:

6am - wake and feed

7am - breakfast

9 / 9:30am - first nap, 90 minutes to 2 hours

12:00 - milk

12:30 - lunch

2:30 - second nap, about an hour

4:30 - milk

5:30 - dinner

6:30 - bath

7:00 - bed

I think your routine looks fine but maybe his afternoon nap needs to be a little later so he has a shorter wake window before bed?
