Domperidone

Hi all,

I've been prescribed domperidone to help increase my breastmilk supply. My doctor said I will need to breastfeed whilst taking it to maximise its effects but after reading the risk of irregular heartbeat in the breastfeeding baby, I decided not to BF but to pump instead. I have been prescribed 7 days worth and am on day 4. My supply has definitely increased, I went from expressing enough to barely cover the bottom of each bottle to anywhere between 1 - 2 1/2 ounces combined. I'm eager to get back to breastfeeding but am still worried about having the domperidone in my milk. Can anyone tell me how long it'll stay in my system for and when I'll be able to breastfeed? I did ask my doctor and all she said was it wouldn't matter as I'd need to breastfeed.

It is great that you have such a supportive doctor. Your Dr is right that continuing to bf not just express is best to help you increase your lactation. Have you looked at the information on domperidone by the bf network? The amount of domperidone in the milk is very low and will within the 10% range which is considered safe. As a drug it is metabolised very efficiently so passes through in a low dose, studies show the amount to be between 0.01 and 0.04% which is tiny.

I took domperidone and continued breastfeeding - the documents I read (the breastfeeding network I believe) said that the risk to the baby was extremely low Smile

I've been on Donperidone for 7 months under guidance of the hospital BF team. They said that the links to heart defects are in elderly patients in the studies. I obviously am not a Dr so can't ever be 100% but I have been fine on them and it has helped my BF so much.

I have been prescribed domperidone twice. I think you are very misinformed there are no risks in breastfeeding and you will need to continue for weeks/months. It’s not a kick start and then stop method.
