We did veg led which I basically followed a lady on Instagram called SR Nutrition. She has a book out called ‘How to wean your baby’ which is supposed to be very detailed but I got everything I needed from her Instagram really and her blog.
I have a 10 month old who eats incredibly well now and weaning has been really quite fun and straightforward - no idea if this is partly down to taking that approach or just fluke though.
Basically I did about ten to twelve days of first tastes which were a different vegetable every day - focusing on the less sweet vegetables and more of the dark green ones eg broccoli, spinach, green beans, courgette, cabbage - I also did cauliflower, swede, potato, avocado I think - I did them all as purée alongside preparing a finger food option - that’s pretty much the only time I did any purées after that we mashed some stuff but mostly went down the finger food route as seemed to work best.
After that I started doing different combinations and adding in different veg and fruit, then started introducing allergens one by one so she could start having egg, nut butters, fish etc.
I went to two meals after about two weeks - we did breakfast and tea time, and three meals after maybe a month or so? She was taking to it really well and it was just easier to have her eat whenever I did, but there’s no huge rush to get to 3 meals. She eats pretty much whatever we eat now although we’ve adapted what we eat to be a bit healthier in light of this.
Don’t bother with baby rice it has no nutritional value. Baby porridge is fine but so is normal porridge oats (and they’re cheaper).
She just kind of dropped milk naturally herself so I kept offering the same number of bottles but dropped each one by an oz (would offer more if she seemed to want it though). There was a bit of buggering about where the only bottle she consistently drank was the bedtime one and she would generally completely refuse at least one of the others but never the same one twice - quite a lot of milk got wasted for a couple of weeks but it just kind of settled into a pattern itself following her lead. As you’ve just started weaning I’d keep offering the same milk and see if your DS starts to take less naturally as you up food, if not you could maybe start to reduce the two middle bottles a bit and see how that goes.
My DD has only just gone to 3 bottles a day at 10 months, 3 meals is really when you feel he’s ready - by ten months but could be a lot earlier as it was for us, snacks should be after 12 months.
