Just been speaking to a friend on MSN and she had to take her ds to hospital yesterday as he has gotten one of her hairs wrapped around his toe in the foot of his sleepsuit and had cut the circulation off in the night. Wasn't really something I had thought about checking for but will be from now on!

OMG ds did this with one round his little finger. luckily I saw it before it went blue.

That's one of Dr Spock's pet worries - his books constantly refer to the danger of sleepsuits and hair collecting in the toes - but I've never heard of it actually happening to anyone!

Something similar happened to my DD1, she managed to find a loose piese of thread on her mosebasket and it cut into her finger, it was infection for ages

I had never heard about it till now!! Friends ds's toe was pretty much black and the hair had to be cut out from the skin - yuk! Might change my name now to paranoidsleepsuitchecker!!!

Flaming heck - I never considered that such a thing was possible. Right, its pjs from now on for baby ds!

handlemecarefully · 05/11/2004 20:27

Am trying to resist going in and checking sleeping baby's toes (not a good idea - will wake him)

i have twin girls and this happened to one of them and the hair had to be cut out, the same thing happened a week later to the other twin but i was able to remove hair myself it would have been a bit awkward going back to a&e

MarsLady · 05/11/2004 20:40

Really glad that I shaved my head now

If anybody else has got any experience of this can you let me know. I am so pissed off, at bedtime tonight I noticed that the tip of ds's toe was swollen and on looking at it closely I thought I could see a hair wrapped around it. i tried to remove it with tweezers with no luck, so rang one of my friends in A&E to ask her advice. She told me to bring ds straight down as it can lead to the circulation being cut off and ultimately loss of the toe. Dh was a bit unsure but after looking at it and trying to remove it he thought there was something there. Very difficult to see as it is along one of the creases. Doctor in A&E was completely sarcastic, said he couldn't see anything, who on earth would wrap a hair round ds's toe in the first place and wahtever I 'thought' I had seen obviously wasn't there now and that the swelling was probably as a result of an insect bite! I ended up stomping out. Ds's toe is still swollen which I would expect as it has now been very poked around with, but the circulation does seem ok. However I am convinced the hair is still there and if his toe falls off I am going to sue the bloody doctor!!!!!!!!!!!

Worse thing is I work in the hospital and I think I am going to knock his block off next time I see him for treating me like an imbecile

zephyrcat · 19/11/2004 21:17

I'd go straight back - if there is a hair in there you need to get it out - has the swelling not gone down at all? In my friend's case the hair ended up embedded right in the skin and his toe was totall black by the morning - she only just made it in time.... hope he's ok

Oh god I'm going to look now.

clairabelle · 19/11/2004 21:19

Did your friend know how long the hair had been there? I'm a nurse I'm supposed to be able to look after my child

zephyrcat · 19/11/2004 21:22

dont be silly - its not your fault - since i've known about it i quite often find my hairs caught round ds's toes but they're really difficult to see coz they're blonde. To be honest i don't know how long my friends baby had it there for - she hadn't thought to check but I'm guessing on a tiny toe it wouldnt have to be long.... can you get him back to the hospital? or try putting a really really bright light over his toe to see if you can see a bit better?
