Nutramigen help!

Hi all,

My LG may possibly have a cows milk allergy and is 5 weeks old. We took her to A and E and they looked her over and prescribed nutramigen. She would cry all the time, never sleep except for bed time as she would be exhausted, she was wheezy, had a noisy stomach and had rashes/hives all over her face and head.

She's been on nutramigen for 5 days as of today after being on formula since 1 week and whilst her symptoms do seem better, she's not taking to the milk well at all. Sometimes when we give it to her she'll fall asleep after the first ounce and won't take any more. If she's awake during feeding, she'll take an ounce then scream and fight through the rest of the feed. A few times she's vomited what seems to be all the milk she's just taken in. Before nutramigen she was on kendamil and was having 4-5oz every 3 hours. Since nutramigen we can get her to take 3 max, very rarely the whole 5oz.

I'm not sure whether we should keep trying with the nutramigen but I'm so worried she's not having enough milk and I'm not sure if she'll ever take to it if she's still like this after 5 days. I also don't want her to associate feeds with distress due to the crying/screaming during.

I'm thinking of breastfeeding instead but I need to build up my supply which I'll be doing in the 3 weeks of cutting foods from my diet. I know ill definitely need to cut anything dairy but will i need to cut Soy? When at the hospital, I asked the paediatrician and she said no but I want to make sure as I don't want to BF and it brings her symptoms back.

Sorry for the long post but I don't know what else to do, she's been like this since 1 week and we're reaching our limits as I hate seeing her cry and be unsettled.

And advice would be greatly appreciated!

1/3 babies with dairy allergy have soy allergy so I would cut out soy too

Most milk is out of your system within a few hours so I'd start bf now.

You can try adding a drop of vanilla essence to the formula to improve the taste.

There are other hydrolysed formulas you can try, ask your gp. Ask for a dietitian referral now too as it takes ages and you'll want one before weaning

@takemetoyourliar do you mean any milk I've ingested previously? I was told to wait at least 3 weeks for it to leave my system completely as her reaction was bad we had to switch to nutramigen straight away and not wean her over so I do t want to risk putting any dairy into her. I was hoping I wouldn't have to cut Soy but I'll do it if needs be!
