1 year old upset tummy help please

Hi all

My 1 year old has had an upset tummy and bad diarrhoea now for over 7 days. He is drinking his formula as usual and we are giving extra water and some plain foods (toast, rice cracker and bananas). He doesn’t have a temperature and is his usual self other than upset when he has a dirty nappy.

I have seen the GP and provided a stool sample awaiting results but she indicated this is quite a normal length of time for a tummy bug?

I’m hoping to get some advice and reassurance how long it takes to pass and what anyone has done to help make him better? Thank you

He may have developed a temporary intolerance or sensitivity to lactose.

It does sound like quite a long time. If he seems well otherwise then perhaps it could be some kind of food intolerance. My dd is intolerant to lactose and the symptoms are bloating, stomach cramps and diarrhoea.

He has never had issues with milk or dairy before. But maybe this has triggered it? I can’t stop him having bottles though as he needs the fluids and will be hungry? Should
I try 24 hours without?

Have you looked at toddler diarrhoea?

Temporary lactose intolerance in a child will solve its self. Keep giving milk because you need to keep his fluids but but avoid extra dairy for a week or so.
