My son is 9 months in a few days and is a very fussy eater, I don’t know what to do anymore. He refuses spoons, thick purées, textured stuff, anything even the slightest bit squishy including steamed vegetables and fruits with thick purées he stores it in his mouth or spits it out and starts screaming. He seems to only like sweet things but for now he rarely opens his mouth for me to feed him. He starts nursery in just over a month but I doubt they will accept him because of his fussiness. He is breastfed but has refused every single bottle going and I won’t be able to go in and give him milk if he’s refuses to eat because i will be working.

I don’t know what I’m doing wrong I have tried letting him feed himself but he won’t and it has nearly completely destroyed our relationship. I stay calm when I’m feeding him but he’s still screams the house down and starts head-butting the highchair. Can someone please help me with advice as I’m at my wits end and feeling like a rubbish mum.

Is it you trying him with bottles? He might be more willing to accept one from someone else. You could also try an open cup like a doidy cup, or a straw cup, to see if he will take milk that way.

With the food, just keep persisting. Don’t fight with him, just give him the option to eat when you eat. If there are some things he will have (like sweet purées) try mixing them with veg and gradually adding more veg and less fruit over time to see if you can get him used to it. At the same time, give him lots of interesting finger foods to try.

@PastaLaVistaBBY I’ve got my mum and my friends to try give him a bottle but he will refuse it for them too, he chews it rather than sucks and gets frustrated. I have tried a doidy cup too but he’s not really keen on that either it makes him choke no matter how slow he drinks.

I’m lucky nowadays if he even opens his mouth for a sweet purée meals are just a massive battle, I put about 5 different options on his tray for him to eat but he just does a squish test if it isn’t crunchy then he won’t eat it, won’t have fruit, steamed vegetables etc only really likes baby puffs or crackers. I’m lucky if he will eat one biscuit a day let alone 3 meals and snacks like the health visitor wants because he’s such an active baby. I’m hoping he will grow out of it soon.

Hi, @Jodie9989 will you let me know how this developed as I’m having a similar problem. Maybe not quite so bad as he is eating purées but he’s 11MO and will only eat a sweet purée or pouch. Can’t get him to eat anything more solid, worrying it’s never going to happen. Sometimes he won’t eat anything and it stresses me out. Would love to know that it just takes some extra time aometimes and he will get it?? Or if you did something particular that helped?
