When did your babies start sitting up?

Our daughter is nearly 6 months and nowhere near sitting. We're reading it's a milestone around that age so getting worried

My LO was 6.5 months.
Please don’t worry honestly, babies do everything in their own time (I know this is so annoying to hear as everyone says it but it’s very true!)

Plenty of practise!
Can she sit up if you were to hold her hands whilst in a seating position? So not exactly unaided but she has the strength for that?

Sls668 · 23/05/2021 20:56

My LO is 6.5 months old and is quite sturdy sitting (with cushions all around as she does tumble after a while) but she doesn’t roll from back to front yet, whereas my friend’s baby did at 3 months. My baby social smiled from 3 weeks, another friend’s didn’t until 9 weeks. Basically, I’m just agreeing with PP, the milestones are a guide, try not to worry about them too much. Babies develop at their own rate.
If you’re really worried you can google the 6 month ASQ and see how your baby scores across all areas, that may make you feel better! Remember though, even if baby isn’t quite meeting the goals on the ASQ, usually the HV would give them another month or so before reviewing again!

Mine was 6.5 months too and I dunno how you can tell if they're 'nowhere near' sitting because one day they don't and the next they can, it just suddenly appears as a skill. Don't worry at all.

@Moonshine11 yes she can do that, she's a bit wobbly but finds it great fun when i help her to sit

The correct sequence is roll, commando crawl, swing on all 4, then crawl, then sit. Ours did at about 7m only. They can be put to sit and may sit unaided even before this, but to sit themselves up that would be the sequence to go.

Letsallscreamatthesistene · 23/05/2021 21:24

5 months. He hit all the first milestones early. That being said, he's 13 months now and is average and in line with his peers. Honestly it doesnt matter, they do things when they feel the need too. Just because they do something early/late doesnt mean your baby will always be early/late. Im convinced babies do things when they see the need too.

6-9 months is the range for baby sitting up

Plenty of time to achieve that

BringMeTheTea · 23/05/2021 21:29

5 months. Don't be too concerned about hitting milestones exactly when they're meant to. Babies are so different.

My nephew didn't sit up until around 8 months.

Cdl84 · 23/05/2021 21:31

To be steady sitting up was more like 9 -10 months. Kept falling back or to sides before that. Didn't crawl properly until 11-12 months but walked at 13 months.

overwork · 23/05/2021 21:43

My parents used to have a picture of me as a baby. They all used to laugh at how difficult it had been to get me into position using a load of cushions, because I still couldn't sit up on my own at 1 year. In contrast my sibling was already walking at that age. I'm perfectly capable these days of both sitting and walking, though I would say I'm really quite lazy! I don't know the first thing about baby mile stones, but I thought you might appreciate hearing about someone who didn't meet them, but turned out just fine

twoticksvix · 23/05/2021 21:48

Nearly 13 months here for my boy twin sitting up properly. He didn't walk til 22 months! Twin sister was sitting at 8 months and walking at 14m. They're all so different but definitely no need to worry Smile

One sat up very competently at 4 and a half months, another was 8 months.

Hardbackwriter · 23/05/2021 22:03

DS1 was 8 months and I remember being quite worried about it. As it turned out he only sat up when he could get himself into a sitting position (and then crawled a week later) - I guess he wanted to do it his way! He was then a champion crawler, walked at a very average 13 months and is now a good runner and very coordinated for a three year old.

Vicky1989x · 23/05/2021 22:11

Could sit with support (cushions etc) from 7 months but not unaided until 9 months!

EnglishRain · 23/05/2021 22:18

Could sit for about 3 seconds without falling at 6.5 months but I'd say she was 8-9 months before she could sit reasonably competently. Now at 10 months I can leave her sat somewhere and she'll be absolutely fine staying up. She still doesn't crawl though, she hates it.

Chickenlickeninthepot · 23/05/2021 22:28

Eldest sat at 6 months, I'm not sure the youngest is ever going to do anything other than lie on her back.

DressingGown87 · 23/05/2021 22:34

My DD started sitting very early on 4 months ish (maybe earlier) with cushions / support. But unaided from about 5/6 months for very short periods of time, now at 7 months she can pull / push her self up into sitting position, and sit unaided / reach for things. But she doesn’t roll, and has only done this a handful of times. I was waiting for the “magic” milestone for the rolling to start consistently, and it’s never happened, and she still hates tummy time. She has got reflux, so has never liked being led down, so I think that contributed. They all develop at different stages.

PastaLaVistaBBY · 23/05/2021 22:37

5.5 months. One day he couldn’t and the next he could - so don’t worry if she isn’t showing signs, it just happened one day for us!

Serafinaaa · 24/05/2021 14:34

My son was four months and my nephew was eight months. My nephew is academically further ahead now at age 6. I don't think it's too important as long as they eventually manage it Smile

Ihaveoflate · 24/05/2021 16:01

My daughter sat unaided confidently for long periods from the week she turned 6 months (quite suddenly. However, she didn't even think about crawling until after 10 months or walk until she was close to 14 months. She's now nearly 2 and still can't really run (which has its advantages!).

They're all so different and don't necessarily do things in a prescribed order. I totally understand being impatient for the next stage - sitting was a game changer for us and I remember being desperate for her to walk.

EllaWt · 24/05/2021 16:12

@Ihaveoflate sitting sure feels like it's going to be a game changer for us!! I guess im just going to have to be patient

AyyX · 24/05/2021 16:24

Just over 5months, she wanted to run before she could crawl 😂
Every baby is different so don’t worry too much!
