Why is a dummy bad for baby

Why are dummies considered to be bad for babies?

I've never witnessed any snobbishness on MN towards dummies, quite the opposite in fact.

I'm very pro dummy - they were fab for my fretful baby and she gave it up at 18 months with no issue. She only had them for sleep though, but I definitely don't judge people who give their baby a dummy during the day (toddlers are a different matter).
