Baby Reflux Tips?

Hello,

My 7 week old daughter has always struggled with bad reflux. All health providers have said reflux.

From early on she’s:

  • been sick after every feed (often most of the BF)
  • struggled to put on weight (she’s done well past 3 weeks thankfully and put a fair bit on so less worried about this now)
  • every time you pick her up the poor thing arches her chest out, puts her head back and it takes a lot of time for her to come out of that ‘S’ shape and for her to stop groaning :(
  • She groans and grunts all the time (I know newborns do this but it’s constant)
  • Won’t be on her back so I keep her upright (no sleep for me) + everything she’s ever on is tilted
  • Wakes in sleep groaning :(
  • you can hear milk bubbling up and down her throat sometimes
  • we feed loads but for short times (HV said this was fine so I’m carrying on)
  • fusses at feeds
  • strains for ages and ages to go for a poo (been trying tummy massage)

There is no way we will get in any routine with sleep!

We were prescribed infant gaviscon which helps keep her feed down but even though I know it’s not an anti acid, I was really hoping it would help with her pain and groaning.

Does anyone have any experience and tips to help me manage her discomfort? It makes me so sad. She spends a lot of time bright red, straining or in a ball.

Anything that I can be doing to help her?

We’ve been going to Osteopath. I’ve been strict with my diet and stopped things that are known to create reflux when breastfeeding (out of desperation)

Thank you
Xxxx

My daughter had bad reflux too and I breastfed her also. If you don’t already, I would sit her upright after feeding for at least 10-30mins. Also I could only breastfeed her 5mins at a time, anything longer she would always throw it up!
It’s really hard when they have reflux, so I feel for you Sad
Hope she gets better!

Get back to the doctor and ask for omeprazole. Gaviscon doesn't work, omeprazole was a lifesaver for us.

This was my baby until we figured out all of his food intolerances (and there are many unfortunately :() If you are committed, you could try keeping a food diary and see if anything correlates? For us, the worst offenders are: milk, soy, wheat, oats, quinoa, sweet potatoes, cocoa, coffee (even decaf), corn and vegetable oils (sunflower, rapeseed etc)
