MAM size 3 teat too fast?

Hey!

Has anyone found mam size 2 teats too slow but the size 3 too fast?

What did you do?

My baby is 6 months old. Taking ages on size 2 teats and not finishing bottles, yet clicking and coughing on size 3 teats and now refusing them altogether.

I have been using 3s for about 5 days so definitely enough time for him to get used to them. I just don't think he is ready to drink it THAT fast. Mam do an '×' teat which is their variflow but it is described as really fast.

Any ideas??

Is your baby still showing signs of hunger with the 2? It might be that they don't have as much as a hunger if you've started weaning too hence the slowness and not finishing the bottle? I used mam with my lb and didn't move him to 3s until he was much older than suggested. Can't remember exactly how old he was now, but he used 2s for a very long time x

MagicMatilda · 09/05/2021 19:51

Oh yes we had this exact thing. He’s 1 now and still on teat 2, no adverse effects that I can tell.

He uses a normal cup for his water with no issues either.

I'm not sure...when I first started the size 3 he finished the bottles well but made sort of 'fast' sounds as he was drinking. I think he didn't really realise it was too fast at first, but now has, and isn't up for it.

MAM says size 3 is for 4 months. I think we only switched to size 2 at 4 months!

Yes, we had this! At 6 months the size 3s were way too quick and we had a lot of spluttering, but weirdly, the ‘X’ cut teats were much better even though I think they were for 6 months plus and the 3s were 4 months plus. I think on those ones they have much more control over how fast the milk comes out.

Oh great, I'll order a few of these and give them a go! Glad we aren't the only ones. Did you skip size 3s altogether then? Went from 2 to X and then stayed there?

@Lnix Yes, we barely used a size 1, then used a 2 until around 6 months, tried the 3 and DS didn’t get on with it so tried the X and stuck with that until he stopped using bottles.

LittleCatDog · 09/05/2021 21:01

I have the same problem, been using MAM 2 since DC was 3 months and still using it at 13 months. Number 3 just seems to come out far too quickly and causes coughing/choking

LittleCatDog · 09/05/2021 21:02

I didn't know there's an X?! Shock

Lnix · 09/05/2021 22:21

@littlecatdog I think the X is a fairly new addition? I don't think there was an X when my daughter was using mam 5 years ago. But we didn't have this problem because she was on a thickener. It's so frustrating, isn't it?? I'm pretty sure he wants the bottle but isn't comfortable with how it's coming out!

He is doing all the 'need to change teat size' things like taking ages to finish the bottle, seeming super keen and then 'giving up'. Drinking for what seems like ages but only getting through a couple of ounces in that time. Almost falling asleep on the bottle. He LOVES his milk so it's all a bit weird and frustrating for us both!

Hi all, we are having the same issue with our just 6 month old - please can I ask whether you found a solution? I’m not sure whether to switch to tommee tippee bottles with a variflow teat or buy the x teat for her mam bottles.

Fredsgirl19 · 26/08/2021 19:09

We just persevered. Lots of breaks and paced feeding holding the bottle flat so the flow was more controlled and within two days she was used to it and we no longer had 30 minute feeds!!

Mousetrap5671 · 26/08/2021 20:20

Number 3 is too quick for my 6mo, we went back to 2 no problems

Libby386363 · 08/12/2021 07:52

Having the same prob right now! My 6mo is ready for next teat but the 3 is SO fast! It just pours out!! Did anyone find the X teat helped? Thanks
