Toilet training DC with SEND

We are trying to push forward with toilet training for our 4YO. He is non-speaking and struggles with fine motor control as well as constipation.

I used to be in the 'wait until they're ready and it'll be easy' camp but OT told us that some kids never 'get it' and we have to work through a programme to develop awareness and toileting skills.

DS is doing really well but we are struggling to get him to come to the toilet. Once there, he will happily sit for ages looking at books etc but it is a real struggle to get him to transition away from whatever he is doing. It is also difficult to get him to come off the toilet once he is settled there. This may be partly to do with the constipation.

We use a visual timer and now and next picture so he understands what is coming next, but he still makes a big fuss and gets upset when it's time to go. If we don't give him any warning then it is worse Sad

Can anyone share their experiences with toilet training a reluctant child with SEND. I am reluctant to go down the bribery route (although we will if we need to).

Any advice or thoughts would be very much appreciated!

Autism Little Learners is a group set up by an American Speech and Language Therapist.

Although it has Autism in the title, so much of her stuff is useable across all needs.
She has done some wonderful free resources over the last year about COVID19 related things.

I noticed she's been doing some stuff about toilet training recently.
I don't know if there is anything here that might help you.

There is a send board which is helpful.

Is he mediated for the constipation? I would be wanting to get that under control first.

Thanks both! He is medicated for the constipation but I don't think we have it completely under control yet.

Sorry I can't actually give any advise, as we are going through the same with our 4yo dd (she's also send), and she's sounds very similar to your ds, it is a nightmare as she's showing no interest at all! She will sit for a very short time on a potty but then gets up quickly and will not sit on proper toilet at all at home but apparently will for a short while at school! hoping someone else comes along with some helpful advise.
