We are trying to push forward with toilet training for our 4YO. He is non-speaking and struggles with fine motor control as well as constipation.
I used to be in the 'wait until they're ready and it'll be easy' camp but OT told us that some kids never 'get it' and we have to work through a programme to develop awareness and toileting skills.
DS is doing really well but we are struggling to get him to come to the toilet. Once there, he will happily sit for ages looking at books etc but it is a real struggle to get him to transition away from whatever he is doing. It is also difficult to get him to come off the toilet once he is settled there. This may be partly to do with the constipation.
We use a visual timer and now and next picture so he understands what is coming next, but he still makes a big fuss and gets upset when it's time to go. If we don't give him any warning then it is worse
Can anyone share their experiences with toilet training a reluctant child with SEND. I am reluctant to go down the bribery route (although we will if we need to).
Any advice or thoughts would be very much appreciated!
