Nappies have hard pieces in them?

I am happily using Tesco nappies which are always soft but have had some aldi ones and another brand I can't remember that have been on top of the cupboard for 6 months. I threw a handful of an old batch out as some of the gel/crystals or whatever it is inside had gone hard and created little 'stones' which I can't imagine would be very comfortable to lie your bum on! I just opened a jumbo aldi pack and the same thing has happened. Are they old and going 'off' or is this normal? I don't really want to use them on my baby as I imagine it wouldn't be very nice for him. The packs are no more than 5-6 months old.

Any chance they got damp and have now dried out, leaving lumpy crystals? We've had a bag of nappies last 2 years in storage, when our eldest stopped wearing them and our youngest was yet to grow into that size. No lumping or anything. Dry and as good as new.

Maybe check for damp?

Pack looked fully sealed and feel dry, room isn't damp so not sure! The first lot I threw had been open a while as I was trying different brands when he moved up to size 3 and felt they didn't fit well yet so I can understand them being opened and sat out but not this jumbo aldi pack. MIL got enthusiastic and bought loads of nappies in advance 😂

oh and they aren't lumpy like they've been wet, it's more like feeling tiny hard stones in different places

Tiny lumps like little stones sounds like it's got damp - old nappies that haven't been sealed in a pack have done this for us
in perfectly dry rooms - the gel in nappies absorbs any moisture, so it feels like tiny crunchy stones inside, but doesn't clump together like you'd expect it to.

It sounds just like the crystals that absorb the moisture. Some places would refund I think if you're not satisfied but I've used them like that and absolutely no issues or signs of discomfort for the baby.

I’ve had the exact same problem and they was also from Aldi but it’s not the whole pack it will be like a few in total, so I know it’s not because they got wet because it’s like they are in consistent so a few will be dry tgen I’ll get the hard one, but this keeps happening to my nappies and I still cannot get to the bottom of it and like u said it’s like little hard bits like stones clumped together but theese are all fresh packs so I’m confused
