Hi! Just wondering how bad the second dose of the Men B vaccine is with regards to side effects? My baby got a really high temperature and was floppy and tired for 24 hours after the first Men B - it was awful. Just wondering if the side effects from the second dose are the same or less because they already have slight immunity? Thanks! Xx

I had similar reaction with my DD at 8 weeks and we ended up in hospital - it was awful! It was over a year ago now but I seem to remember the 16 wk one was fairly uneventful and she took the calpol a bit better being a bit older. I’m sure she still had a temp but could manage it better. I hope your little one is ok !

My little one is 4 now but I remember they were better he went off his food for a bit. Then I was told to take him to be checked where he downed 3 and a half bottles on the way🤣 typical of him. But they were no where near as bad as the first lot and easier to give him carpool.

@Yogamummy23 thank you! I was shocked at how hot he was last time and floppy - just worried as don't like seeing him like that, I suppose it's only 24 hours and it's for the best! X

@kidsareok how have you gone on? My baby had her 16 weeks vaccs yesterday early morning and still has a temperature. I've managed to get ibuprofen down her (she projectile vomited the paracetamol like last time so I think it doesn't agree with her!) 3 times but she's really unhappy and I'm not happy either!

onlyreadingneverposting8 · 14/04/2021 14:44

I should just add that baby is 21 weeks as we were late starting the vaccinations due to shielding - she had her 8 week vaccinations at 13 weeks!

kidsareok · 14/04/2021 15:59

@onlyreadingneverposting8 hi! So the vaccination itself went ok, he screamed but I expected that. He got a very high temperature again 12 hours later so we stripped him off and gave him calpol, he also had a raised temperature for about 24 hours afterward the injection. He had it at 2pm but by 7pm the next day he was fine. He was also a bit subdued and clingy the next day too. Aww I hope your little one is ok 💕

Thanks for replying! I think they should be more truthful about the side affects - it's quite frightening and the literature seems to make out that a dose of calpol will most likely prevent anything noticeable, which isn't true at all. Just praying now that she's well again tomorrow!! I'm a terrible worrier and baby isn't even my first! Glad to hear your little one is fine again now! I know it's worth having the vaccine just hate the side affects!! Xx

The JCVI found that ibuprofen does not reduce the rate or intensity of post vaccination fever and is not recommended as an alternative.
Stick to paracetamol.

onlyreadingneverposting8 · 14/04/2021 17:27

@cptartapp ibuprofen was ok'd by the nurse to use. She projectile vomits paracetamol has done on the 3 occasions we've tried it so I think she's allergic to it.

onlyreadingneverposting8 · 14/04/2021 17:28

Also says it's ok on the bottle in bold For fever post vaccination aged 3 - 6 months.

onlyreadingneverposting8 · 14/04/2021 17:31

But actually I do agree with you that my go to for fever is paracetamol, where as for teething its ibuprofen

cptartapp · 15/04/2021 06:51

I am a practice nurse and we are trained to advise paracetamol as per the national guidelines, not ibuprofen as it is not proven after vaccination.
Paracetamol allergies are extremely rare, the vomiting was likely due to the flavouring.
Anyway, hope your DD is ok.
