Dark brown/ black thread like bits in poo

Hi All,

I've noticed a small amount of brown specks/ a bit that looks like black thread in my babys poo. She is 5 months and formula fed

I'm starting to worry and wondered if anyone else had noticed the same?

She seems fine in herself otherwise

Have you introduced any foods yet?

SandlakeRd · 08/04/2021 21:08

Have you started with any weaning? I ask because the first time my DS had banana his poo was very similar!

absolutehush · 08/04/2021 21:10

If you have introduced any foods, especially banana that can sometimes look a bit odd.

I had black specs a few times when my nipples bled - any chance he's bitten his tongue/cheek and it's a wee bit of blood?

I've not started weaning yet so not that

I was thinking maybe from teething but I've not noticed anything on muslin that she chews on.

She has been straining a bit more thebpast couple of days

Hi @New2020 how is the baby?

New2020 · 12/04/2021 13:23

Hi @absolutehush thanks for your message.

We called the GP and he didn't seem concerned and said it was difficult to know what it was given she has no other symptoms. He suggested we keep an eye on it. She had one other poo which had the same, so strange looked like dark brown/ black thready bits that looked a bit mucusy. Then the next was normal...she only poos once a day.

She's been a bit constipated so no poo yesterday...waiting in anticipation! I never thought I'd be thinking about poo so much.

I googled it and noticed a couple of other people noticing the same and the pics seemed similar too

Poor thing, being a bit constipated! I'm glad GP seems relatively relaxed and she's ok in herself!

MalteserGeezee · 12/04/2021 14:43

It's banana! Absolutely freaked me out first time I saw that. But it's probably banana!

New2020 · 12/04/2021 15:47

Thanks @absolutehush I can't help but still worry and hoping it's not blood. GP said to keep a close eye for the next couple of weeks and hopefully it disappears!

@MalteserGeezee we haven't started weaning yet got the joy of that in 2 weeks! So more poo worries

So all was well but this appeared again in the most recent poo

I'm wondering if this is normal? I'm planning to call the health visitor tomorrow who will hopefully have seen many more baby poos

Sorry for TMI..this is what the nappy and bits looked like

She's not on solids and formula fed

Hmmm, they don't look hugely concerning but the HV is a great place to ask. If it's not happening a lot and baby is ok, I would try not to worry.

The body does do funny things sometimes. Let me know how you get on, please?

Hi, @New2020 did you find out what was the reason? How did you sort it out. I am experiencing exactly the same with my 4.5 months old. Really worried. I know its an old thread but really need your advice please. Please reply.
