Mobiles At School

How does it work at your child’s school? At DD12’s, it seems they are allowed to have their phones on them all day & to use them at breaks but it appears that DD is getting distracted & she & her mates take sneaky selfies etc in class. I have contacted the school before but DD reckons she uses her phone all day long. I find this very concerning. I have E Mailed DD’s tutor to ask f the phones can be taken away all day.

So stop her taking it in?

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 31/03/2021 21:19

As above. If she is losing concentration on her work then kick some butt and confiscate it for school.

pinkcattydude · 31/03/2021 21:20

Ah so to add to the confusion, DN has to use hers throughout the day to research things etc. But DS isn’t allowed his turned on at all during school hours 2 offences and they aren’t allowed a phone on site at all.

They are at different schools

DS is also expected to use his phone in lessons too

What does the school offer to students who dont have a phone / have forgot theirs / arent permitted to bring it (parents rule)?

I'm assuming these kids are in schools in affluent areas if all children are expected to bring a smart phone to school
RedGoldAndGreene · 31/03/2021 22:01

Kids at our comp are expected to use phones in class sometimes eg teacher will ask them to take a photo of the board

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 31/03/2021 22:27

Are mobile phones (with cameras) listed as an essential item on the school kit list? I'd be right fucked off if I confiscated DC phone at home for misbehaviour only to have to hand it back over for 40 hours a week because the school insist.

BluebellsGreenbells · 31/03/2021 22:28

Stop asking the school to parent for you.

TeenMinusTests · 01/04/2021 08:37

At DD's school

  • off and away in lessons unless a teacher says they can take photo of h/w or use for research. Those without copy down h/w or share with another for research.
  • permitted at break / lunch only when sat down somewhere
  • not allowed in corridors

They took the view that phones are a modern tool and sensible use was better, plus they didn't want to spend effort policing at lunchtime.

OP. if your DD can't exercise enough self control to not much about with a phone in lessons, then take it off her until she is older.

Thatwentbadly · 01/04/2021 10:13

How many students are in the school? Can you imagine the cost of secure storage, insurance and admin time it would take to remove the phones from that many teenagers? Alternatively you could just remove one every morning.

Starlightstarbright1 · 01/04/2021 10:17

If you know what is going on then parent her..

I send my son at times without a phone..He doesn't like it..He isn't meant to.

You could also tell her if it continues you will buy a phone that just texts and makes calls.

LadyCatStark · 01/04/2021 10:21

Phones aren’t allowed in class unless the teacher says they can for research. They don’t have to have a smart phone but do have to have a ‘device’. They’re not allowed them out at all during break time, lunch time or even in and around the school grounds before and after school. This is a relatively affluent grammar school.

yeOldeTrout · 01/04/2021 11:00

Like OP describes, the school has low tolerance about use of phones outside of approved times. I love this system and long may it last. DC can text home if they forgot something or go to after school events so will be late. DC have texted to say the school bus broke down. The kids all have an internet-enabled device to hand in class, useful for lessons. Godsend.

RedGoldAndGreene · 01/04/2021 11:06

Ours take phones when they do exams in the sports hall so that when they do GCSEs they are used to handing in their phone.
Kids who don't have a smartphone are expected to share with the person sat with them or get to borrow a school tablet if they are available.
Sometimes homework is to use an app so if my child had their phone confiscated by me they'd have a phone that is so locked down that they can only use those apps and not go on TikTok etc

BluebellsGreenbells · 01/04/2021 11:12

Ours arnt allowed them during class or breaks, keeps the kids focused

DS has his to take pictures of the work as he’s dyslexic
Another boy has his as he’s diabetic and it monitors his levels.

DS had his phone out when he shouldn’t and got detention, he lied to the teacher.

I gave the teacher my phone number and said if he’s rude again I will personally go to school and remove the phone. He was also told this information and hasn’t done it since.
