7 year old won’t play with toys anymore

Feel quite sad that my 7 year old DD no longer wants to play with any toys or do crafts etc. Isn’t 7 years old far too young to grow out of toys? I’m sure I was still playing with barbies age 10.

All she seems to enjoy doing is going on the iPod (limited use) and dancing/listening to music. She’s not very outdoorsy, though I am so this is encouraged. Hates all sports/bikes/scooters/rollerblades anything like that. Just feel like I’ve failed a bit.

She is very sociable but would much rather sit and gossip with friends rather than enjoy an activity together. She tells me sometimes she spends lunchbreaks at school alone to avoid the ‘baby’ games like tag, what’s the time mr wolf etc.

Has anyone else experienced this with a young child? I have no idea what I can do to rein it back but I feel awful like all childhood things are passing her by!

At this age I wouldn’t give her a choice about exercise. Drag her out for brisk walks or bike rides if you have to. Sounds like she’s really sedentary - some kids are naturally like that and probably need a bit of encouragement

Have to agree w pp. If I left it up to my kids they would not go to the park as much as we do. Now that they are older it takes some convincing. But they always have fun once we get out. And at the very least we make sure to get out for walks and exercise.

Perhaps try and encourage her to try new things. Or play new games. We get our kids to try out new board or card games. Even if they don’t want to.

Or we get them to do certain things before they watch tv. Like they just go to park and play with their toys for two hours, read, finish hw etc. Tv doesn’t go on until they finished these things.

I reckon it’s just a phase. My dd had a few listless months between suddenly deciding she wanted to get rid of her Polly Pockets, Sylvanians, Lego Friends, Baby Born etc... and finding something new that interested her. She now likes her karaoke machine, Kumi Kreator, light tracing box, keyboard and roller skates.
