How to control tatty hair in child?

My daughter's both get large knots in their hair no matter what I do. I plait their hair every night but when they get up it's still in but hair is all over. I bought cantu hair shampoo and conditioner but makes no difference. I have 3 detangling brushes and combs. What can I do? My eldest especially has dry thick hair which even in the slightest wind goes all over the place. Maybe a really good leave in conditioner?

Is it Afro or mixed hair? Have you tried covering their hair at night to sleep in after you’ve plaited it? You can buy scarves or bonnets or cheaper still my mum used to make bonnets out of old pairs of tights for us girls! Just pop on their head, waistband first and secure by tying legs round the head and trim the legs so no strangulation risk.
