8 week old baby feeding every 1.5-2 hours (formula)

Hi all,

My 8 week old ds has a 6oz bottle, he drinks about 5oz -5.5oz everytime and then refused his bottle but then about 10-20 minutes later he'll start rooting and crying, sometimes I'll offer the bottle back if it's still within the hour and he'll refuse it but I try to stretch it out to at least 2-2.5hrs but it's not nice having a screaming baby, he had like 10-12 bottles a day andI've read online he should really only be having 5 feeds and going 3-4 hours and 6 hours at night, he apparently didn't get the memo and I don't know what I'm doing wrong, I feed him aptimal If that makes a difference, please can someone offer some advice?

Has he always been like this or is it new?

If new, it sounds like cluster feeding related to a growth spurt and should pass.

If he's always been like this, could it be more a desire to suck than actual hunger? I used to think DD was the greediest baby ever because she would just root, root, root and cry too, but it turned out that sucking on a knuckle would settle her. Unfortunately she never accepted dummies, had to be a knuckle! She's sort of growing out of it now but still likes to chew her hand a lot.

It’s normal. They have tiny tummies abs have lots of growing to do. Feeding every 3 to 4 hours was based on a study of baby birds.

That's totally normal. Ignore the frequency of feeds it says on the box, and remember that babies can't read.

So Dd did this and there's no straightforward answer.

As others have said, could be normal, growth spurt.

But, like mine, you are way over average amounts.

A dummy might help.

It could be silent reflux, the milk soothes the burning so they look for more and won't settle. You could speak to doctor about infant gaviscon. Is baby quite unsettled generally? Comfort milk we also tried which worked for a few weeks but things have gone downhill. It's thicker so seemed to settle in tummy better initially.

Could be CMPA which we are now looking at after exhausting all of the above. Dd is finally settling.

It's really hard. I've been back and forth to doctor since January and had a lot of help here.

I do understand the keep feeding advice, and I did try that. But 6 ounce ten times a day is a massive amount of milk. Dd was up around there some days before I posted here as well.

My son did the same. It turned out it was related to reflux. He was crying for more milk because it soothed his sore throat.

I was fobbed off for ages by HV and GP saying because he was gaining weight it can’t be reflux... he was gaining weight because he was drinking so much!

I only realised when he was about 11 weeks after a bit of research and noticed a few other mild symptoms.
