21 month old nightmares?

Last night DS woke around 11 but wouldn't go back down in cot so I brought him into bed for the first time in ages for a cuddle. He went straight to sleep and we had a snuggle for about an hour. He then woke abruptly shouting at the top of his voice cuddle cuddle cuddle sounding really panicked! I was right there next to him and tried to reassure him and after a few seconds he went straight back to sleep as if he had shouted it in his sleep. About a minute or two later he started having like a tantrum hitting and kicking and pushing my face. I settled him one time by holding him close but it happened again and I couldn't stop him so I rolled him away from me and that seemed to wake him properly and he started crying a more normal cry.

It has disturbed me a little bit that he is so young and maybe having nightmares like this? Is this normal?

That sounds more like a night terror. Google them because you need to respond to them in a different way.

I had wondered if it was a night terror but because I could soothe him the first couple of times I thought maybe he was more with it than the description of night terror seemed. I really don't know. Does night terrors mean the baby is distressed during the day and it's coming out in his sleep? Poor little one :(
