Potty Training - day then night or both at once?

Hi everyone,

My lovely little boy who is 2 years and 3 months is showing signs of being ready to move from nappies to the potty.

I wanted to ask other parents how you did it? Did you “day train” first so little one is dry during the day, and leave them in nappies/ pull ups at night time until further down the line? Or did you tackle day and night training in one hit?

My little boy has a little milk before bed as part of his wind down routine (his only milk of the day) and I wonder if giving him a drink before bed is setting him up to fail...?

My mum thinks I should cut the milk at night entirely to help him but I am not sure about this.

Any advice would be very welcome.

Thank you!

I've never understood the dry at night thing - DD trained at 2, she's now 4.5 but still in night nappies. I'm pretty sure she wakes and immediately wees in her nappy! How do you know when the wee happens?

Mine does this too. I know she does because as I said upthread, when we first started training for day she used to wake in the night crying for the potty, her nappy was wet in the mornings but only a bit and she would wake crying to go to the potty and then do a massive wee. After a few weeks she stopped this, her nappies went back to being huge, no night waking for a wee and she never does a wee on the toilet upon waking anymore - so she must be doing it in her nappy upon waking before I get to her! Interesting suggestion from another PP to put nappy over knickers to keep the wet sensation. I think I am going to wait a few months til she's closer to 3/the summer especially as she's had a regression recently anyway so hasn't been as reliable in the day as usual and I don't want to upset that even more. I was thinking about trying training pants first overnight as they don't remove the entire wet sensation as theyre not as absorbent. Also she's still in a cot bed so thinking of converting it to a bed in summer and then leaving a potty out so she could go herself if she needed to at night. I definitely wouldn't push any of this though I know tons of kids aren't ready to be night dry til much much later.

We did say when DS was 2.5, just started nights now at age 5. Still having wet bed at the moment.
