3.5yo - pooing in his pants after a year of doing it in the toilet!

Is it just a phase? or lazieness? or him not concentrating?
He did it occassionally over the summer playing out in the garden at nursery - but that was just him not wanting to stop playing to go to the loo.
For the past 3 weeks or so - he's been doing it about once a day and once in the loo. He says he doesn't notice it happening - but its fairly solid - so he'd have to push.
Any ideas? I started by ignoring it and just changing him and reminding him that he was a big boy and to tell a grown up when he needed to go. But I'm beginning to get ratty with him now.

My ds was 3 in september and also started pooing his pants every day over a period of a few weeks, also after months of doing it in the toilet. I dealt with it by making a HUGE fuss of him when he did do it in the toilet, just like we did when toilet training him - sang a well done song, phoned granny, gave him a chocolate button - and it worked.

I've promised him a comic if he manages all day at nursery with no accidents. I'm just woried he'll end up holding it in!
