How long should a 13 week old take to drink 6/7 oz? Mine takes almost 40 mins sometimes and fussed around the bottle even after changing brands of milk and bottles any advice or is this normal?

What size teat?

Dd is same age, size 2 teat as was taking to long with size 1 and getting cross.

Has 6 X 5 ounce bottles per 24 hours, plus BF evenings and first thing.

Shes on NUK teats medium feed hole I tried large and she chokes because too fast, she also cries inbetween breaks of feeding. She's better on these bottles than TT tried thicker formula but got so constipated so toom her of it not sure what else I can try 😔

Sounds silly but are you holding the teat round the right way? The hole for the air has to be pointing upwards. Also don’t screw the cap too tight.. keep it loose or it creates too much vacuum and she won’t be able to suck any out. I done both of these things when my DD was small and she’d take forever to feed, once I figured out the problem she was finishing in 5 minutes and was happy.

Yeah air hole always facing upwards and always make sure the teat isn't tight before feeding she'll have a couple oz fine then wind fine then go to give her bottle and she fusses from then onwards x

Comfort milk? I had to put Dd on that. Silent reflux symptoms, crying between feeds. Sore. It's thicker but for colic and constipation

Shes on comfort milk now 😔 I can hear her tummy making growling noises as she feeds seems like she's in pain she scrunched forwards but then when the bottle is put to her she tries to suck like she's not been fed at all then pushes it away after a few very loud gulps, wish I knew what it was tried a few different milks/bottle brands etc she's so happy at all other times other than feeding

@Lauren5976 Have you tried just letting her drink and not stopping to wind (unless she stops herself)? My DD would refuse to drink anymore after stopping to wind so I just let her drink as much as she wants.

I could give that a try I was winding her every couple oz because the HV said she has silent reflux the thick milk did seem to work but she was in so much pain with constipation I had to take her of it not sure if it's worth going back to it and maybe giving her something to help her with being able to poop

My daughter went through a phase of fussing on the bottle at a similar age, tried changing teat sizes and it didn't seem to make any difference and she just seemed to get over it after a month or so. I think we are often too quick to change milk brands/types and this can lead to more upset. I would also try feeding her without stopping to wind as you may find they are now able to cope with this. 7oz is quite a lot for a 13 week old, could it be over feeding? I know I've got into cycles before of overfeeding leading to crying leading to me thinking they are hungry so overfeeding more.

Vicky1989x · 18/03/2021 15:51

@Lauren5976 I agree with PP - 7oz does sound like a lot. I also used to mistake her sleepy cues as hunger cues. From what you describe though, it sounds like trapped wind. My DD used to suffer so bad with trapped wind, no matter how many burps I got up she would still do the gulp gulp pull away thing. I started making her milk warmer and she was burping better and not suffering with trapped wind.

How warm do you serve her milk? My DD prefers it very warm, almost hot and it’s much better for her tummy.

ThePricklySheep · 18/03/2021 15:54

Have you been to the dr? Growly tummy and seeming in pain doesn’t seem right.

How would I know if its overfeeding? She has 5x6oz bottles a day but I always make 7 so she's got some left over she rarely has 7 she might sometimes in the morning after sleeping through.

Her bottles have a thermo on them so just do it so its warm and in the safe zone. She does really do 7oz it's usually 6oz at approx times off 730,11,230,530,830 then sleeps through shes a big 13 week old weighs 15lbs

OP posts:
Vicky1989x · 18/03/2021 21:41

@Lauren5976 perhaps they need to be a bit warmer? I always test on my wrist, I never go by the thermo. 15lbs?! She’s a big girl! My DD is 18lbs at 10.5 months 🤣

Anyway, I think maybe you should go to your GP. You’ve clearly tried everything so next step would be to get some medication for the reflux.

Lauren5976 · 19/03/2021 15:10

We've seen the GP she has silent reflux we've tried anti reflux milk but makes her very constipated so we took her off that, they've prescribed her today with omeprazol and we've picked up some carobel to thicken her milk but not as much as the anti reflux milk. Fingers crossed we're onto something 🤞😊
Thanks all for advise
