Toddler hates mud!

So all winter (luckily) DD - 22 months - has loved splashing in puddles and getting herself all muddy. A couple of weeks ago we went to the park where she got very muddy, and a couple of older women 'told her off' for this as they were walking past. Not sure if that's relevant, but this is where the hatred seems to have started. Now whenever we go for a walk and she sees mud she just keeps saying "eugh muddy" and tries to avoid it. If she thinks she's got some on her shoes she'll walk funny for a bit and then ask to be picked up. Today we went to the beach, so no mud just stones and sand! She just moaned about the mud the whole time and needed carrying by the end. We've tried ignoring it, and telling her that mud is fine and we like it, but it makes no difference. Has anyone experienced this? Is it just a phase, and how should we handle it? She doesn't cry or anything, just seems to want to not touch it.

How do you mean these women "told her off" what did you do while strangers scolded your child for which is a natural behaviour. They should have had their arses handed to them!

Just keep encouraging her to play, if you have to, jump in mud yourself, poor wee soul that's awful, where do people get off interfering.

They just told her that she was very dirty and would need a wash, but in a reprimanding sort of way if that makes sense? I don't know if she was really listening to them, but it's all stemmed from there!

Yeah it does make sense their tone sounded awful. Don't worry too much. Just keep doing what you're doing and she'll soon forget.

How rude were those women?! If it's any comfort my son hated getting dirty to the extent that they gave him plastic gloves at nursery if they were doing messy stuff! He is 6 now and is better about it but still dislikes getting muddy.

My DC went through this at a similar age. A few months later and DC is over it. We just kept going out, not making much of a fuss about it and making a bit of a game of it

That's good to hear! We'll just try to make it not a big deal and hope the mud goes away soon anyway!
