Clingy 4 year old

My 4 year old is super clingy with me atm. He's always been clingy, but thought he would grow out of it once he started school (he'll be 5 end of July – so a young one in his year). When we are outside in the park he's very independent but at home he sticks to my side like glue. He won't go into another room or even to another side of the same room that I'm in he says that he's too scared. I love him to bits but at times it gets too much – any suggestions on how to improve this situation? is this just a phase or can I help improve this situation? is it an age thing? I'm a single parent and he's an only child... I wonder if this has anything to do with it? Any advice welcome! :)

He needs an incentive to explore something away from you. Tell him there’s something interesting/ exciting/ different in another room ( Make sure there is) .
