Best books for babies?

Any lovely suggestions for books to read out loud to babies?

The 'that's not my' series are great.

Any flap books but be prepared for them to be ripped apart

Crinkly books are great too, Lamaze do good ones, there more of a toy than a book, but babies love them!

‘Hug’ is so cute - about a little monkey who’s lost his mummy. Impossible to read to a baby without sobbing.

These are my go to recommendations for baby books that give parents pleasure too.

Peepo is the best book for babies EVER! So much on every oagey, lovely illustrations.

I got 2 fabric books for DS, he wasn't so interested in the Lamaze bug one (although I rate their toys, he loves them). He is mad for the jellycat avocado book though!

Anyway apart from that, Night Monkey Day Monkey.

There's a range of books called Indestructibles, they're untearable, waterproof and you can put them in the dishwasher, my 10m old loves exploring them. And he hasn't managed to damage them yet!

Dr Seuss for the rhythm. Goodnight Moon was another fave here.

We like That’s Not My books.

We also have a couple of books published by Nosy Crow which are lovely - one is a Bizzy Bear book and the other is Old McDonald. More robust than lift the flap books but they have tabs to pull, if that makes sense.

Other favourites in our house include The Very Hungry Caterpillar, Bouncing Babies (Helen Oxenbury) and for older babies, the Acorn Wood lift the flap books (Fox’s Socks, etc).

And our 13 month old adores this, as did his older brother, although it doesn’t look like anything special:

Usborne baby’s first noisy nursery rhymes book is great as well.

Oh yes, we also love Chuffa Chuffa Choo Choo!

What age did PP's DC get into books? My DS (8 months) still mostly just wants to shut them (unless they're crinkly fabric "toy" books)

You're going to read them a million times so they need to be enjoyable for you too. My favourites:

I always read slightly more complex stories to mine from the get-go - they enjoy the experience even as tiny babies of listening to your voice and looking at the pictures. Their understanding grows in layers over the years but the most important thing is the experience of enjoying a book together.
