8.5 month old hates being in the car

Hi,

Our little boy is in the Axkid Minikid so it's a great sturdy car seat, before that he was just in his infant car seat. I'd say for the last month or so he's really started to whinge after being in the car for 10 mins. I think he just hates being restricted, he just wants to be out and about. It started around the same time he started crawling. We have toys for him but nothing keeps his attention and he'll just whinge and whinge which is super distracting when you're driving. Any advice would be greatly appreciated! x

Does he hate his car seat outside of the car as well? Do you find any improvement when the car is moving/stopped?
Bring the car seat in the house and let him sit and play in it. Once it becomes more familiar in the house, he may be happier to sit there in the car.
Practice with short, pleasant trips when he’s is in a good mood. It helps if someone can sit near him and keep him entertained. A few good experiences may help set a new pattern.
Hang a mirror. That way he can see you and hopefully and just seeing your face will help him feel better.

My 9 month DD is the same. She doesn’t like to be “contained” in general so doesn’t like being in the buggy for too long etc.

For the car I ended up getting her one of these: www.very.co.uk/lazy-arm-for-phone/1600015086.prd

I put my phone in it and she watches kids cartoons on YouTube while in the car. It’s the only thing that keeps her from screaming her head off.

I don’t like her to watch too much tv etc but we don’t take long journeys, just 15 mins max. I only use it when I’m on my own in the car with her, when DP is off work he sits in the back with her while I drive to entertain her.

Honestly? iPad/iPhone in a harness! It was the only thing that worked for our dd and I had to let go of the screen time guilt heaped upon us!

For what it's worth she's now 2.5 and a total bookworm and now she brings about 9 books in the car for every journey and no iPad. It was a means to an end!

My 1 year old has just started this. He was always fine and would fall asleep but for the last couple of months he will usually scream the entire journey.

My partner drives and to calm him I often have to turn back and keep my hand on his head so he knows I’m there. Blush
