BABY CRIES WHEN FEEDING

My 11 week old has been really fussy when feeding for the last 2 weeks crying and sometimes screaming when taking a feed,( she's bottle fed ) I've been giving her one bottle in the evening with gaviscon in as we think she has silent reflux (not being sick but shows all other symptoms)
Should I give changing her formula a go? To an anti reflux formula?
Starting to get to a point where its upsetting feeding her she is hungry but doesn't seem to enjoy feeding time and it takes her almost 50 minutes to finish a feed 😔

Possibly an allergy or intolerance l would seek medical attention for testing.

I've spoken to docs already and HV they said if it was allergy or intolerance it wouldn't have only just started and they've said silent reflux. Shes never sick just seems in discomfort

Wind can be really debilitating with bottle feeding! Could be that? Try a thicker formula so there are less bubbles maybe and try to get at least a few burps after each feed, burping after every 2oz as well. We used comfort milk for the lack of bubbles in it and it did help a lot

Try a faster teat, she might be frustrated with the flow.

Shes on a medium flow teat at the momment the next flow is fast flow and says from 6 months + so wouldn't this be too fast? Shes 11 weeks old

Wind can be really debilitating with bottle feeding! Could be that? Try a thicker formula so there are less bubbles maybe and try to get at least a few burps after each feed, burping after every 2oz as well. We used comfort milk for the lack of bubbles in it and it did help a lot

She does stop pretty much after every oz otherwise she starts coughing and screaming so I burp her everytime she stops shes a good burper I don't think it's the wind 😔

I would try a variflow test and have you tried putting Dentinox in the bottles?

If you have a look on YouTube, the Tiger in the Tree hold is pretty effective at bringing up wind so that should help.

I'm not sure that your HV is quite right about when CMPA can present though. Have a read of this from Allergy UK and see if the symptoms are similar.

Just the cmpa Facebook group and have a look at other posts from parents and see if you think there's any correlation. Waiting til six months and weaning to get an obvious diagnosis (with all the hell of full blown reactions to solids) isn't what you want. Trust me, I went though it. Age 3 now and still very allergic to dairy and egg

I've looked at symptoms for allergies but shes never sick just cries when feeding she also gets hiccups atleast 5 times per day. I've spoken to the doctor this morning and she advised trying a thicker formula for anti reflux even though I've said shes never sick, she seems bloated after every feed though. She socks the bottle as though she's very hungry then pushes it away and shakes her head so all I can do is keep offering, burping every oz eventually she'll finish a 6/7oz bottle but can take best part of an hour which I don't think is normal 😔

My boys 11 weeks old now as well, sometimes he's fine but a lot does go down his front with the fast teats. The variflow teats are too small for comfort milk (visibly thicker milk) to get through and he got bad gas again trying to suck from the medium flow teats. So we just use fast flow and change him regularly.

Be warned comfort milk will make their poos stink for the first few poos until they get used the it. Poo also goes green but again returns to yellow/green once settled on comfort milk. His poos were also a thicker consistency initially but he was never constipated/in pain.

Also don't use Gaviscon with comfort or anti reflux milk because it will make her constipated. Gaviscon alone can cause constipation. It's one or the other.

My little one also started crying when feeding before we changed milks/bottles. He started to regurgitate and actually threw up a couple of times around then too, hence why we started changing bottles/milks. He was about 4 weeks old at the time. Before that he had loads of hiccups and you could hear the milk in his throat, gurgling etc..

Are you feeding with him lying down or on an angle (ie in a seat?). DS had silent reflux and could only feed comfortably sitting in his car seat, if he was flat or held he screamed.

@Lauren5976 I’d try changing the bottle to be honest. TT aren’t the best - my DD hated them! I use Nuk, the teat that comes with it is quite fast but when I put her on that she was downing 6oz bottles without a fuss! Before she’d only take 2-3oz and scream the whole time.

She might be sucking too hard and getting trapped wind.

I've just ordered some NUK bottles thank you, do you know anything about the teets? I just ordered bottles that say 0-6 months shes currently on a medium flow teat which is fine for her do you know if the 0-6 month flow will suit?

She would take the first oz easily but it was a real effort to get anything else into her and she dropped centiles. We ended up seeing a paediatrician who diagnosed silent reflux and prescribed omeprazole which has been a game changer, she feeds so much better now so it’s definitely worth speaking to your GP

@Lauren5976 I found the 0-6 teats that come with them are quite fast (so might take her a little getting used to) - they’re definitely a lot faster than other medium flow tests!

Mine cried when feeding when he had an ear infection. Has she been checked over in general?

I spoke to my GP and she prescribed her with gaviscon whats the difference is the omeprazole better? I only give in her evening bottle because it makes her really constipated if she has anymore so she'll go down really well at night but in the day I have to keep her up for quite a while
