Garden play area 3 year old

Hi all
We have a concrete rectangle in our garden with a wooden pergola over it (used to have hot tub on it) which we're filling with rubber chips and making into a play area for our 3 year old.
It doesn't really have space safely to put swing/ climbing frame etc on it but I still want to make it a really exciting and fun play area for my 3 year old ds. Would I be best off getting toys like giant rubber lego bricks and an aqua play set or do people have other suggestions? Was thinking maybe a little wooden fronted 'cafe'/role play Wendy House thing?

Mud kitchen, ours love it.

Another vote for a mud kitchen, our 3 year old will play for ages in the mud.

Wooden look nice if we'll kept but the little tikes hard plastic houses last better. I got mine 2nd hand and it was still going strong 10 years later with just the occasional pressure wash. No splinters, no gradual deterioration.

We also had their slide with climbing end and tunnel. The kids were still playing on it at 10 years so got a huge amount of life. After that it was still good enough to sell on.

Agree @GoldenBlue . I picked up a plastic smoby kitchen off FB. They play with it outside constantly, it's covered in mud, washing it is a favourite game.

Mud kitchen. Why are you putting rubber chips downs?

We have a playhouse and a mud kitchen but my 4 year old is really too tall now for the little tykes house and she much prefers the mud kitchen. She is very tall though.

Thankyou all for ideas! Using rubber chips as apparently bark chips become a cat toilet quickly....

A table/bench and some trays for messy play! Much better than in the house...

I looked on Facebook marketplace and got things like a plastic cooker with plastic cooker, little tikes rocking horse, a water play table and it all works really well for DD to play in.

A playhouse will be great, but he may well have outgrown it (in height not interest) by next Summer, so personally I wouldn't get one new unless you are planning on more children or find one with bigger proportions. You can get some bargains on Facebook Marketplace. I've just cleaned up and sold our Little Tikes house in a Spring clear out along with the Cozy Coupe and rocker as 4.5yo DD2 is too big for them now.
We have a Little Tikes Tropical climbing frame which still gets a lot of use with both DCs (DD1 is 6.5yo), and both a water table and Aqua Play which are also still popular and going strong. I am currently in discussions with DH on what to get to replace the sold items. I want a Lifetime Geodome and Swingball, he wants to get a trampoline (I am not keen as it's an eyesore and will require constant supervision, which defeats the point IMO).

I agree with PPs about a mud kitchen. We don't have one, but it doesn't stop DCs spending hours making mud pies and mud cookies around the edges of our veg patch. Much better to have it done in a defined area! DH was against having one, but in hindsight it would have been a good choice.

Keep it patio so they have somewhere to cycle a trike/ scoot/ kick a ball/ put up a hoop in a year or two? What is the rest of the garden?

We have a small yard too.
We put fake grass down when she was 1, best decision ever.
She has previously had sand/ water table (now destroyed), mini trampoline (grew out of it very quickly as she was 3 when we got it).
Was 3 during lockdown 1, spent most of it sat at outside table doing crafts (I.e random gluing, cutting, scribbling and sticking). Chunky chalks worked very well. Paddling pool also very fun, but took an age to fill with warm water. Bug hotel was another hit.
Maybe take inspiration from outdoor areas of local nurseries?

How about a tuff tray and stand? We use them loads at nursery for allsorts. Messy play, sand, water, arts and crafts or just playing with toys. I wish I had one when my dds were younger (if I had a garden, we lived in flats until they were older!)

Definitely agree with a mud kitchen, very popular at work. :)

Thankyoi everyone. After reading these ideas and having think decided to firstly pave it so he has something flat to ride/push things on. Mud and pebbles digging area. Small wooden role play hut thing (like a cafe or shop front really). Sit on tractor thing. Chalkboard. And tape with road markings on to go on the ground. Going to be brave and try and make a water wall too to go with his sand and water tray!
