Breastfed? Then likely normal. Google Cluster Feeding. My first baby did it from 6pm to 10pm most nights. Get a station ready where you usually feed, food, drinks, remote etc and just settle in. It will pass. I think about 6 weeks mine got themselves into a more manageable feeding routine.

Aquamarine1029 · 03/03/2021 15:35

If you're breastfeeding, this is completely normal. Your baby is hard at work establishing your milk supply.

squirrelnutkins1 · 03/03/2021 15:36

Very normal. It's overwhelming but it'll get easier x

Breatfeeding IS hard. I wish somebody had told me this rather then sugar coating it. Stick in there.

Lindy2 · 03/03/2021 15:40

My eldest DD did this but mostly in the evening. It is to do with establishing milk supply and I believe it was also some comfort feeding. It suddenly changed when she got to about 5 - 6 weeks old and she didn't cluster feed again.

I actually then quite missed the evenings of having to stay on the sofa, watching tv while she fed with DH being the one to run around sorting out dinner and all the household chores.

millenialblush · 03/03/2021 15:41

Normal. Exhausting, but entirely normal. It will get easier.

Merename · 03/03/2021 15:43

Ah bless you, agree it’s cluster feeding and totally normal. Hopefully knowing that can help you relax and enjoy. Just make sure you pee before feeds and get all the drinks and snacks within arms reach, oh and remote control! He is putting in his order, telling your boobs how much to make. When you say dried up, are your nipples sore? Have you tried lansinoh cream between feeds? Try it if not. It won’t always be like this honestly, maybe just a few more weeks and things will lessen a little, he’ll get more efficient at feeding as well.

jorhat · 03/03/2021 15:56

@Merename i dried up,the latch start to feel painful and seems like hes hungry and not being full... what to do to get a little one hour rest to stimulate breast feed

Feeding is what tells your body to produce more milk. As long as he is producing the right nappies I would think he is getting enough. Is he being weighed by the health visitor or that is that not possible in covid times?
It does get easier if you can stick at it.

Love it is tiring, but it's normal.

You don't need time off feeding to replenish milk it's the other way around - sucking stimulates milk.

But you do need time to rest - is there someone who can take the baby when their not feeding so you can sleep?

Thatwentbadly · 03/03/2021 16:07

Is he following his centile line? Pooing and weeing enough? If yes he is getting enough milk.

Cluster feeding is him ‘putting his order in’ for tomorrow, he has enough milk for today but as he gets bigger he will need more milk so he feeding to stimulate your milk supply so you have more milk for him tomorrow. Cluster feeding happens daily to until week 6 to 8 depending on the baby and then only when having a growth spurt. Although then they often feed lots during the evening so they can sleep for a bit longer over night.

If the latch isn’t great, google the flipple technique - don’t be afraid to take him off and relay her every time he has a poor latch or he slips. Air your nipples as much as possible and use lanishon nipple cream.

Breast feeding is hard work but you are nearly thorough the most difficult part. Well done!

ThePricklySheep · 03/03/2021 16:09

Is he trying to get to sleep? They, annoyingly, start to find it harder. And they can only manage about 90 minutes awake. Have you tried walking in a sling/buggy after he’s been awake 90 minutes? I could never work out with my eldest whether she was tired or hungry. Endless cycle of feeding, waking around rocking her, feeding, eventually sleep.

Thatwentbadly · 03/03/2021 16:09

Relay is suppose to be re latch!

LockdownIsDragging · 03/03/2021 16:10

Oh and if you haven’t already try ringing one of the breastfeeding helplines, they are there to offer support.

Milkshake7489 · 03/03/2021 16:18

PP are right, cluster feeding is normal and nothing to worry about.

But you don't have to solely breastfeed if it's not working out for you. Please don't feel like you can't supplement with formula if you want to. Since having a baby i have found that far more people combination feed than I thought (5 out of 7 in my NCT group!).

Whatever you decide to do, good luck Smile.

jorhat · 03/03/2021 16:27

@Thatwentbadly Im from pakistan, there are no helplines here... theyll probably give me top feed if i ask them...
my baby was 8 pounds when he was born.. got jaundice in early age and lost till 3.6 then last time i check 18days old he gained 3.8.. my baby has wet diapers and passes stool twice a day but he is always hungry and now the sleep is also getting less porbablu for one hour after long cluster feeding

jorhat · 03/03/2021 16:30

@LockdownIsDragging

Am i wrong on this that long long feeding is emptying my boob and the hungry baby remains hungry ?

OP posts:
jorhat · 03/03/2021 16:31

@Thatwentbadly how long do you think he will sleep after clusterfeeding.. mine is sleeping 2 hours max

OP posts:
Porridgeoat · 03/03/2021 16:34

He has to suckle to create the demand and to establish the milk production. First month is naturally very time consuming as a result. It gets more efficient and much quicker in the second month and then even more efficient after three months

Porridgeoat · 03/03/2021 16:36

He has to suckle to drink the milk and then suckle some more to establish increased demand and production. All very normal.

RinkyD · 03/03/2021 16:38

This is normal, you might be overlactating fore milk so DC is not getting the stuff that fills them up.

What is your diet like, are you eating well and enough, are you drinking enough. I used to drink like a horse. I also used to eat lots too. My DC were permanently attached for the first month and sleeping was totally erratic.

jorhat · 03/03/2021 16:42

@RinkyD please explain again? Overlactating so he is not getting enough?

My SIL called the NCT feeding advice line from Pakistan (she's British and her baby was older -long story) and they helped. Do try xxx
