Weaning from omeprazole

Can anyone advise me on the best way to wean a 2 year old off omeprazole? I've heard stomach acid gets worse when you do for a little while and I'm worried. She has really bad restless legs and I'm convinced the omeprazole is causing this and the constant night wakings. I've called the doctors and waiting for a call back but would appreciate any advice from anyone with experience of this x

We weaned our DD off it when she was just under a year old, she was on 10mg and we went down to 5mg for a few weeks as advised by the GP, then stopped it altogether. I remember there were a couple of days where she seemed quite unsettled but it didn’t last too long and wasn’t as bad as I’d been anticipating! She started sleeping a lot better after we took her off it too.

How much is she on and how fast as you weaning?

We self weaned off it so started on 5ml and dropped 1 ml at a time.

I weaned my daughter off, but at a much younger age. We found that she needed to come down by a tiny amount (1ml) a week at a time. The only time I tried a heartier reduction it hit her after three days and the acid ramped up massively. So my advice is take it slowly.

Good luck!

Thanks guys :) she's on 10mg a day so maybe take it down to 5mg? The doc has prescribed gaviscon to try to help the process. But she did say just take her off completely, I don't need to do it slowly?

i wouldn't go full hog on cutting one and replacing with the other (all three of mine have used both simultaneously so there's no contraindications etc).
what dosage of gaviscon? Is she just having the gavi in her milk?

SleepingStandingUp · 03/03/2021 12:42

I'd probably cut to 7 ml then 3 ml then 0 every three days if you've got the gavi too. If it gets worse on any of the cuts speak to the GP

We weaned our ds off around 11 months- he was on 20mg (2 tablets dissolved) so we tried 10mg for a few weeks, then 5mg (half tab), then quarter tab then nothing. We didn't notice any adverse affects especially since he was on a high dose to start with.
